Sound of Metal

Films have gotten clever about that.

Sound of Metal, that we're only going to talk about in passing, was also very clever in how it used sound.

Yep.

And made you really understand the difference between this original hearing and how the cochlear implants he got were not the miracle cure he thought.

It was in theaters.

Um, hopefully before the end of the year can see it but yeah it's another one of these guy with great hearing he tunes pianos but then through series of events he is helping people break into safes because he can hear really well and then there's also I saw someone maybe make a list like there's that movie The Sound of Metal

about a guy and I thought that was just about hearing loss but maybe there's some something about

And I think that that could be true of a lot of these filmmakers.

You know, Field and Tarr, like, you know, the way he kind of locks himself away for years and years at a time and just, you know, toils away doing commercial directing while... conceptualizing a an insanely you know dense project I think is an interesting career especially when you kind of look at the character of Lydia Tarr that him and Blanchett crafted and just sort of the ways in which she's got to be out in front of everything and has got to have her name on everything and has to be prolific and it's kind of interesting coming from a director who has three features and you know mostly kind of just works commercially to make ends meet I think that's I think that's interesting and worth exploring as we're getting to music have you guys seen Sound of Metal there is a med yeah that's another good one i really like i've only seen it the one time um that's like the only amazon original movie i've ever watched that i was like oh this is an actual motion picture and of course it's just because they i need to watch one night

is cinema yeah absolutely i mean it's a movie it's so good

Sound of Metal.

Whiplash.

Yep.

Okay, so we had that sort of in the back of our heads.

A friend of ours, Paul Racey, who was nominated for the movie Sound of Metal, an actor, great actor, he did a one-man show.

He has quite a life story to tell.

And it was just a workshop of it.

It's an awkward thing to be proud of.

Number three, I place The Sound of Metal with Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer who suddenly begins to lose all hearing and struggles to hold on to some part of his life in pursuit of a solution that may not exist.

I like that movie.

I never saw

It's extremely clever in its sound design in every way that Tenet isn't.

It was very good in its sound design.

When he finally gets his cochlear implant, sorry, spoilers for Sound of Metal, which I'm sure everybody was going to watch any day now, the sound design shows us how imperfect a solution this is compared to what he'd hoped.

Yeah.

that's how I feel about the matrix winning as well where you know it was the only non best picture nominee in the category and it won and like who could possibly argue for anything else winning that category that year

I also got a shout out sound of metal winning this because it's so unlike what I feel like they would typically ever go for.

Just continually surprising to me that that ultimately won out over Trial of the Chicago 7, which felt like the, you know, the choice that they usually would go for under these circumstances.

Sound of Metal's a cool winner.

I love that movie.

I'm still convinced it won because people saw drums and thought of Whiplash, which also won, which had much showier editing, but that's just me.

I had that feeling throughout this, especially with... clarence macklin divine eye but yeah then of course the credits sequence gives you a highlight of all the actors showcasing like as himself as himself

which is really really cool honestly the only people that aren't i believe are coleman domingo sean san jose and uh paul rachie who makes an appearance in this movie He basically is playing the same character that he plays in Sound of Metal.

And Elizabeth made a comment because she's never seen Sound of Metal.

And I'm like, I'm going to show you this soon because I mentioned him.

I'm like, he's in Sound of Metal and he plays a very similar role.

And she's like, I really liked him in this because he feels like he's a person in real life that would do this.

And I'm like, funny that you mentioned.

He's very much that kind of guy.
