Sound art

But what I am doing is I am leaning into the artist part of me more.

I create sound art.

So soundscapes and I paint and I mix media and I sound is just such a beautiful is our first means of communication.

And it's such a beautiful, it has the power to transform and to hold and to create virtual reality experiences where you don't need a lens, you just need your imagination.

And it translates, you don't need to have a spoken dialect or anything.

And so I, whilst I'm in this transition, I'm working on a project to create sound art I, um, I've redesigned my, it's not coaching anymore, but my coaching practice is now more a personal advisory support practice called Threshold.

And it's all exciting and, um, I think that the next book is really the next chapter, the next doorway, the next chapter of my life.

And I don't know what medium it's going to take.

May Wilcher is a Pittsburgh-based sound artist and experimental musician whose practice spans glitch, ambient, noise, and drone.

I met her at the open improv lab and was fascinated by how she was improvising with household items she was pulling out of her backpack.

Our conversation starts with her explaining what it means to her to be a sound artist.

For me as a sound artist, I'm not necessarily paying attention to traditional music theory.

I'm more interested in like textures and density, other sorts of parameters.

My dad was a musician and he tried to teach me guitar and I was a big baby and my fingers hurt too much for that.
