All of these seemingly unrelated disparate topics that we have been covering on the program over the past few years are are all about to crash into each other less than a month from now as folks go out to the polls, cast ballots, not only on who the new mayor of Sooke will be, not only on who the Sooke Council will be going forward, but on whether former Sooke Councillor and current MLA for the area, Dana Lajeunesse, remains the MLA representing the NDP, or if the Conservatives manage to turn this riding blue and establish a beachhead amongst the seven electoral districts that we monitor here on South Vancouver Island.

CEGK News reports the Mount Jack wildfire near Sooke was reclassified Saturday from out of control to being held, meaning the British Columbia Wildfire Service expects it to stay inside its current boundaries.

At more than 276 hectares, it's the largest fire on Vancouver Island this season, burning about four kilometers west of the Sooke River.

Rain on Friday night knocked fire behavior down to a smoldering ground fire with no open flame, and crews saw no significant growth overnight.

Roughly 65 firefighters and support personnel were assigned to it on Saturday, including a capital regional district crew, heavy equipment operators and danger tree fallers, working the south and west flanks to widen containment.

But it's good to see that the Sooke School District has a much more positive relationship with many of the stakeholders, including law enforcement in their community, which, again, if we're going to judge it against District 61, certainly, I think, makes it preferable.

But we've also been reminded more recently.

of the importance of making sure that we have things like adequate water service available, especially in areas where we're building out new housing in places like the West Shore, as well as safeguarding the overall regional water supply system itself in terms of the Sooke Lake Reservoir.

and making it resilient to the perhaps unlikely but still very serious risk of wildfire that could happen within the Sooke Lake watershed.

And the impacts of that prospective event, coupled with the fact that we just don't have a filtration plant right now, it doesn't take much imagination to imagine how badly that could go if it happens.
