What was the last thing I watched I talked about? Mad Max? Mad Max you talked about, yeah.
JacobHOST
3:54
I watched Something Wild, Jonathan Demme movie.
JacobHOST
3:58
Jonathan Demme, the director of Sounds of the Lambs and Philadelphia.
JacobHOST
4:01
I really liked it.
Chris KlimekHOST
4:21
Only one shall survive.
Chris KlimekHOST
4:23
Resentment and estrangement among collaborators trade licks with brilliant performances shot and edited brilliantly in these twinned masterpieces, both from directors more famed for features than for documentaries, and both of whom started out making movies for schlockmeister Roger Corman, my favorite detail.
Chris KlimekHOST
4:38
This is before they were Academy Award-winning A-listers.

Plunged into the fiery depths of the hot box, a tropical torture chamber where anything can happen.
Katie CokinosGUEST
44:14
What is she going to do? And sure enough, it was good.
Katie CokinosGUEST
44:17
And when I worked with David Lynch on Something Wild, you know, oh, she had a great Roman Polanski story of working on Chinatown and how – When they find her dead, they were going to have Polanski wanted to have ants coming out of her mouth.
Katie CokinosGUEST
44:37
And she said, not told Roman.
Katie CokinosGUEST
44:39
Roman, that's just too much.
Kari RaceHOST
25:02
aside for a second have we talked about after hours have you seen after hours
Joe ChristopherHOST
25:06
i was just gonna say like oh when we're done talking about the song i need to ask carrie if she ever watched it because i did watch after hours remember i was on a mission to see after hours and something wild
Kari RaceHOST
25:17
Oh, yeah.
Kari RaceHOST
25:18
It was like something in my brain was telling me you had seen it recently.
Kari RaceHOST
25:40
But yeah, I do.
Kari RaceHOST
25:41
I would love to watch it again.
Kari RaceHOST
25:43
And yeah, After Hours and Something Wild, that's a great double feature.
Kari RaceHOST
25:48
So the song, I...
David HeathHOST
13:59
Not to mention Melanie Griffith.
David HeathHOST
14:03
We did an episode on Something Wild, and it really escaped me.
David HeathHOST
14:07
Something escaped me when I did that episode.
David HeathHOST
14:11
And that is that Melanie Griffith told Jeff Daniels her name.
David HeathHOST
14:19
was Lulu.
David HeathHOST
14:22
Wow.
David HeathHOST
14:23
And if you think about it, Lulu's character in Something Wild is very much like Lulu in Pandora's Box.
David HeathHOST
14:39
And so, yeah, check it out and see.
ScottHOST
45:48
Something that suggested the evening might yet end with broken glass and someone saying, I told you not to mention it.
ScottHOST
45:57
From something wild to goodfellas, from Copland to the many strange and varied corners of his later career, the otter brought a particular kind of danger to the screen.
ScottHOST
46:06
Not cartoon danger, not moustache twirling danger, or the danger of a man who's trying very hard to behave himself and may not manage it.
ScottHOST
46:16
So before we return to Antony and Copland, let's spend a few minutes with Ray Liotta.
ScottHOST
46:33
recently passed.

46:34
Is it true that you kind of pitched for him to play Henry Hill there, that you kind of had to not talk Scorsese into it, but you were a real booster for him for that?
Robert De NiroSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
46:44
Yeah, I mean, I told Marty I saw him in the Jonathan Demme film, something wild.
Robert De NiroSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
46:49
I said, this guy you should look at.
Andy SHOST
64:09
And I actually want to kind of start this because Oliphant's character made me wish I was watching one of my favorite 80s romps.
Andy SHOST
64:21
which is something wild directed by the great jonathan demi um i think it's kind of the cleanest recommendation that i have other than a movie that we've talked about a lot on the podcast where you have like a like an uptight guy who gets pulled into like a dangerous sexually uh charged misadventures with a woman um but halfway through that movie jeff daniels comes in as her like crazy ex-husband and uh gives very similar oliphant energy
Brandon BombayHOST
64:51
You meant Ray Liotta.
Andy SHOST
64:52
Ray Liotta, I'm so sorry.
Andy SHOST
64:54
Yeah, Ray Liotta comes in and Oliphant gives, you know, the same kind of energy that Liotta does, that really charming, but like this guy is fucking dangerous kind of energy.
Andy SHOST
65:06
I love Something Wild.
Andy SHOST
65:07
It's one of my favorite comedies of the 80s.
Andy SHOST
65:12
And yeah, just the uptightness of the guy, a very loose, sexually liberated woman and a crazy person from her life.
Eric ChildressGUEST
14:15
Yeah.
Eric ChildressGUEST
14:16
He's doing Something Wild on September 16th, and then-
Nick DigilioHOST
14:18
Wow
Eric ChildressGUEST
14:18
... uh, we're showing, uh, Ma- uh, Final Cut of Manhunter on September 30th with Peter Sobczyk.
Tristan FidlerHOST
39:43
And even then, this was...
Tristan FidlerHOST
39:46
Simon and I did a session with... reviewers that were part of the In the Frame project and I think they talked about this film and there was a similar kind of mix response so I think that is always interesting and that's kind of what you hope because sometimes consensus can be a bit critically boring and particularly films that are like this where I can think of a few examples those films that just shift halfway through like Jonathan Demme's Something Wild or From Dusk Till Dawn you know where a road gangster movie turns into a that is always a big shift and turn for any filmmaker to make because, you know, the promise that you create at the start and how people might feel like, oh, you've just removed that promise, you've let me down.
Tristan FidlerHOST
40:31
So it is always kind of brave to do that, though it can obviously lead to mixed results.
Tristan FidlerHOST
40:35
So I think after hearing this conversation and your reviews, Laura and Lucy, I'm more keen to check it out than I probably was beforehand.
Yazdi PithavalaPANELIST
10:52
But I think there is one thing about the film that is not celebrated enough, in my opinion, and that is the direction of the late Jonathan Demme.
Yazdi PithavalaPANELIST
11:00
This is the same filmmaker who made the ahead-of-its-time Something Wild, the zany Married to the Mob, the bruising Philadelphia, and the entirely underrated Rachel Getting Married, which in my opinion has the best Anne Hathaway performance to date, which says a lot.
Yazdi PithavalaPANELIST
11:16
But the fact that he also pulled out of his pocket one of the most claustrophobic and chilling horror films of all time speaks to his versatility.
Jade HindmanHOST
11:25
When I hear you all talk about these movies, like Beth, you were talking about how you kinda put yourself in the position of someone who might have been targeted by a serial killer.
