Johnno KeetlesGUEST

It really does feel that way.
Johnno KeetlesGUEST
50:44
Um, one thing I would love to see, and, and nothing's been announced yet, but for a band like Powderfinger or, or if Silverchair was to get back together or whatever, I would love to see them, instead of going and picking, you know, a Eskimo Joe or Super Jesus or Something For Kate as a support act, pick an up-and-coming rock band-
Tegan TaylorHOST
51:02
Yeah
Johnno KeetlesGUEST

... who the fans can then latch onto as a new favorite band.
MarioGUEST
77:15
Interesting.
MarioGUEST
77:15
He just doesn't have any tone to his voice, which is, in an episode of ours that hasn't dropped yet, we're talking about Something for Kate.
MarioGUEST
77:23
And I was bemoaning how much I can't stand 1990s non-cover singing Paul Dempsey.
MarioGUEST
77:29
He's just utterly, boringly monotone, and his voice just drones, and he just holds these bland, musicless notes for far too long.
Jono CaddellGUEST
9:13
It really does feel that way.

... who the fans can then latch onto as a new favorite band.
Adrian KospicGUEST
23:59
Yeah, I think it would definitely be, like, an Aussie song, an Aussie band song.
Adrian KospicGUEST
24:02
Maybe, like, Monsters by Something For Kate or something newer.
Adrian KospicGUEST
24:07
Maybe, like, Feeding The Family, something everyone knows-
ElsieHOST
24:09
Mm-hmm
Adrian KospicGUEST
26:05
First ones that come to mind, I really liked the two Betty Raes ones, Better In Black and Kasan.
ElsieHOST
26:11
Yep.
Adrian KospicGUEST
26:12
Something For Kate, Sweet Nothing.
ElsieHOST
26:13
Yep.

Some music to end.
speaker_0HOST
56:03
Look, it was so cool that Something for Kate covered a Jebediah song shortly after it came out.
speaker_0HOST
56:09
It's an era before YouTube made cover versions almost meaningless.
speaker_0HOST
56:13
Here's that track.
speaker_0HOST
56:14
Here's Harpoon by Something for Kate.
speaker_2SOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
56:18
This could take some explaining.
speaker_2SOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
56:35
But do you think she can see it when I tell her It's the end for you and me, it was over Ever since you went and shot me like a harpoon Like a harpoon, like a harpoon
Paul DempseyGUEST
12:21
And even then it didn't feel very concentrated because the way I go about it is so extremely simple and stripped back.
Paul DempseyGUEST
12:29
And that's my whole approach to doing covers is to really not... put too much thought or effort into it so I guess from the late 90s onwards one thing that I noticed happening was that radio stations especially commercial radio stations if they had you in they always wanted you to play a cover they wanted you to play someone else's song you'd play one of your own tunes as well but then they'd want you to have a stab at someone else's song i guess they thought that was fun for their listeners and then obviously that turned into things like you know like a version which have become these kind of institutions so it kind of started from like being constantly asked by radio stations or whatever um and then we started just kind of dropping them into our set you know something for kate would like throw a cover into a set just to kind of break it up just as a like you know our music is a certain way some people would call it depressing or but you know people have said that before i don't agree but you know our music is kind of moody um so you know we'd throw in the you know echo in the bunnymen song or something just to kind of like change up the mood and and uh have a bit of fun
Michael MackenzieHOST
13:45
Oh, which Echo and the Bunnymen song
Paul DempseyGUEST
13:46
were you covering?
Paul DempseyGUEST
13:54
Yeah, and, you know, we did The One I Love by R.E.M. and, you know, just songs that we loved and they were just fun to play.
Paul DempseyGUEST
14:02
But then I guess it took a bit more of a concentrated turn.
Paul DempseyGUEST
14:06
Something for Kate, we were on a very long tour in 2013...

There is...
Jon BamptonGUEST
18:42
There is an Australian band called Something for Kate, and they have a song called Feeding the Pigeons, brackets, and Hoping for Something in Return, in brackets.
Jon BamptonGUEST
18:55
So that's a bit more of a positive song about pigeons.
Jon BamptonGUEST
18:58
Apparently.
Jason MillarGUEST
20:28
Love it
GeorgiaHOST
20:28
... to get you warmed up? Something for Kate.
Jason MillarGUEST
20:30
Oh, I love Something for Kate.
GeorgiaHOST
20:30
The Panics.
Jason MillarGUEST
20:31
Yeah.
Brendan WebbGUEST
82:00
I do remember going there, though.
JohnHOST
82:02
Do you remember your first, like, gig with Something for Kate? Yeah.
JohnHOST
82:09
Or do you remember, was that like towards the sometime between lessons and posture and tyranny?
Brendan WebbGUEST
82:16
I think the first time that we played with them was probably at the pushover.
Brendan WebbGUEST
83:42
So I think, yeah, like, so yeah, we would have played with them at Central Club for one of Fiona's gigs, like the Scene Star gigs.
Brendan WebbGUEST
83:50
And maybe even we played with them twice, but there was always quite a few bands playing on that gig.
Brendan WebbGUEST
83:56
So I wouldn't have said, oh yeah, we played with something for Kate.
Brendan WebbGUEST
83:59
I would have said that they were on the same bill, like same as...
