Somass River

Eric Plummer of Ha-Shilth-Sa reports the demolition is set for March of twenty-twenty-seven, with federal funding committed, and it was announced on Wednesday at the Truth and Reconciliation Walk in Port Alberni that drew more than a thousand people.

Caldwell is one of two buildings still standing from the Alberni Indian Residential School, which operated on Tseshaht territory by the Somass River in various forms from eighteen ninety-three to nineteen seventy-three.

Chief Councilor Ken Watts says the project runs over half a million dollars including the event, and the priority is funding to help survivors travel.

The plan is a gathering where former students can witness the teardown and perhaps take part.
