welcome back and take a look at this what you're watching right now is the solar what happens when a solar eclipse forms solar eclipses are you know kind of counterintuitive you think maybe solar eclipse would be the sun going in front of the moon but that's not the case it's the moon Covering up the sun and it creates a beautiful, beautiful image.

And we kind of had some experiences with that here in the CSRA Miller.

I don't know if you have ever been there.

And it definitely wasn't a great time for me, but...

Okay.

I loved the solar eclipse.

Oh, that's right.

That's part of your vacation.

I don't know what came over me, uh, last year, and w- I must have been drunk when I decided to schedule-

What are the odds?

[laughs] What are the odds? That when I decided to schedule a, a vacation around this solar eclipse so that I would be off the coast of Spain where it was going to be 100%, uh, totality, um, solar eclipse, that it, there was, I, I would be able to see 100% of it.

Mm-hmm.

You know, there's a lot, there's a lot of change going on.

Eclipses tend to impact, like, world politics and, you know, big global moments.

And so they, if we think about, you know, our ancestors, well, yeah, if you saw the sun turn black for a little while and everything go quiet, of course you're gonna be like, "This is a bad omen," right?

[laughs]

I wanted to

say that we're actually recording on the August the 12th, right? Solar Eclipse and Leo.

Yeah.

What is

And as I was researching total solar eclipses, I came up on a document that was by Lieutenant James Melville Gillis from 1859 that's in the collection of the Smithsonian.

And it was called An Account of the Total Eclipse of the Sun.

And it was really striking to me for a number of reasons, one of which it was 2020, and this was an account that documented the local population's response to a solar eclipse that talked a lot about a fear of a plague being visited upon them.

And during 2020, you know, that resonated in a big way during the shutdown.

... for the total eclipse.

So I took Dad.

Never seen totality, so I was very, very excited for him to see a total eclipse and, you know, we had, like, blue skies until, until the eclipse started and there was, like, a cloud in the wrong place.

Yep.

And honestly, you could not make it up.

that's the eclipse this cocktail is way better than the book um so let's get it actually you know what i want to i do want to say the one positive thing about the book that i have because it does tie into the name And since we're talking about Eclipse or whatever, and it kind of like, we're not starting at the beginning when I say this, but I don't want to forget to say it because it's going to be the one positive thing I probably have to say.

Okay.

So, you know how like in every book, the title is used at some point in it? Yeah.

I actually really liked the line that Jacob said to Bella about this.

He said, I can, I forget the thing, but he's like, I can't, I can't compete with an eclipse.
