A new study in Hungary's Tokaj wine region has examined whether natural undervine mulches can improve soil resilience under changing environmental conditions.

Researchers applied sheep wool and alfalfa hay mulches across four vineyards with contrasting volcanic and loess-derived soils, monitoring soil organic carbon, labile carbon, microbial activity, and glomalin-related soil proteins for two years.

The effects were strongly site-specific, with neither mulch consistently outperforming the other.
