Nick NeedhamGUEST
88:14
It's sometimes called Socratic rather than Elintic.

Is this genuinely a good task for me to, use the AI for.
Julie DirksenHOST
23:52
Presumably there's also some qualitative decision around how I'm using the AI, right? You know, the, the, you know, using it in a, I mean, everybody, everybody keeps talking about, well, you know, use it, use a Socratic kind of questioning model and use it to challenge your ideas.
Julie DirksenHOST
24:11

Samuel SalzerGUEST

Yeah, in some cases, I think.
Louis MarkosGUEST

And we do sometimes need a pre-evangelism that sort of prepares the ground And one of the things I talk about in my Plato book is what is the difference between Socrates and Plato? People have different theories, but my belief is what Socrates did is he came along and cleaned the ground.
Louis MarkosGUEST
24:07
He, reading the early Socratic dialogues, which I think are very much Socrates as opposed to later ones, which are very much Plato, like the Republic and the Phaedo and the Phaedrus and the Timaeus and all that.
Louis MarkosGUEST
24:19
The early ones, They always start with, what is your definition of courage or the colors, the beauty, the fine, or your definition of friendship? And then Socrates spends the whole dialogue destroying and showing that that's a false, usually it's a false definition because it's not universal enough.
Louis MarkosGUEST
24:39
It just tells me this, but it doesn't tell me this.
Louis MarkosGUEST
25:19
And that is preparing us.
Louis MarkosGUEST
25:22
The other thing that Socrates and Plato did that's important for Christians is they brought together metaphysics and ethics.
Louis MarkosGUEST
25:30
There were lots of pre-Socratic philosophers talking about metaphysics and but they weren't as interested in ethics in the real world.
Louis MarkosGUEST
25:39
Then there were others like Stoics that were very ethical, but not very metaphysical.

Deb HolmanGUEST

Deb HolmanGUEST

I think there's a continuum of routines and strategies that the teachers are choosing from the simple routines that we repeat like the cold calling to a Socratic seminar, which is a big organized thing that you do in a circle with text and with high school students often, I think middle school does it too.
Deb HolmanGUEST
45:06
Even some of the simple things like a show me board, a white board that I've seen math teachers use at the beginning for the first 10 minutes where kids are in pairs and there's a problem up on the board and they're working it out and then they're cued to, thank you, then they're cued to work with their partner on it and correct it and then show the teacher.
Adam GreenGUEST

One of the things we're doing to tie these different threads together that we've talked about, Julius, is actually give kids neurofeedback on when their attention is too much focused on what the LLM is telling them and not internally focused enough to help them keep that balance so that their attention can be focused on their own thinking even while they work with AI.
JuliusHOST
68:37
Yeah, the one thing I advise everyone when working with AI, if they still want to learn something and actually take something away from their session with ChatGPT or Cloud or whatever, is something that is called Socratic learning.
JuliusHOST
68:55
So by doing this, you basically tell the AI, you ask me questions and let me learn.
JuliusHOST
69:02
formulate my words and come to my own conclusions.
