Socket AM5

You know, we were screen sharing and looking at each other's performance.

I was like, well, I probably should go to AM5 and do an X3D CPU.

I was going to wait to Zen 6.

That was always my plan to upgrade around the time Zen 6 came out.

Oddly, Balan was on Facebook just reading through one of the support pages on Facebook and he found a person with an ASRock motherboard describing our exact problem and he's currently trying to work out why system won't turn on.

Whether or not it's killed his memory, I don't know.

And it's one of these things, like the 12-volt high-power connector, like the AM5 CPUs burning up in the socket, This one is even worse than that because I don't think this is a widely reported issue and I don't know what the cause was.

And I don't know if it's just this one particular motherboard that is defective.

I almost can't believe that they're asking this question at this particular point in computing history.

But do I upgrade to AM5 and DDR5? Do I wait until DDR6 and AM6? When does good enough stop being good enough? For context, I do a bit of everything.

Python, gaming, 3D modeling, photos, and editing.

OK, so two things.

One is AMD.

A friend of the show, Adam Patrick Murray, last week wrote in to let us know that AMD is carrying through with AM5 through 2029.

Now they've committed to it.

and saw where the bottleneck was with a by testing with a bunch of different gpus it's definitely worth watching you're fine like the the nice thing about am5 and amd keeping sockets for a long time is that when the 10x 10 800 x3d or whatever the next version of the x3d chip the next architecture hits is you'll probably be able to upgrade to that like the prices of the 9800 will come down you'll be able to put whatever cpu you want in the socket so like At some point in the future, if it starts feeling slow, yeah, put a new CPU in.

Yeah, they announced AM5 is getting one more generation of chip, didn't they? They said it was going to go through 2027, I think.

Okay, yeah.

Surely, they will launch one more generation
