Part one, The Friendship Flight.

One, Boston Social Worker.

A low-slung yellow Kissel Roadster with top down, a grinning tousled-haired girl at the wheel rounded the corner, sped down Tyler Street in Boston, and screeched to a stop in front of Denison House.

Before the girl could get a leg out of the car, a swarm of children from the settlement house gathered about their favorite teacher.

He numbered among his clients such aviation notables as Richard Byrd, Clarence Chamberlain, Sir Hubert Wilkins, Lincoln Ellsworth, and Ruth Nichols.

A dark-haired, handsome man, Hilton Rayleigh seated the two women off to the side of his desk.

He was pleased with the appearance of the humble social worker, who, he had learned, had a private pilot's license and had logged more than 500 solo hours.

What he liked above all was her striking resemblance to the greatest of American heroes, Charles Lindbergh.

Throughout this series, we're highlighting the practice, leadership, and advocacy that reflect the past, the present, and future of the profession.

Today, I'm your host, Sarah Panissi, and I'm Senior Analyst at the CASW.

Because the Canadian Association of Social Workers is a national federation composed of partner organizations across Canada, our work takes place on the traditional lands of many nations across Turtle Island, and we wish to recognize, in a spirit of friendship and solidarity, that the lands of First Peoples remain unceded.

What this means to me as a settler is that the benefits that I enjoy every day, especially during the summer—the water, the plants, and the wildlife— are directly the result of the stewardship of First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples.

Their respect, their knowledge and practices allowed life on Turtle Island to thrive.

We are together again to look at a place where social work is increasingly being drawn into.

One, it wasn't always trained for the courtroom and specifically class action litigation.

You're not running a daycare.

You want them to come in and do work and contribute without having to feel like you need a whole team of social workers in HR to make sure that, you know, they're, they're okay.

Because that's just, it's, it's counterproductive and it's just, you know, antithetical to adulting and what you expect from an adult.

Physicians and lawyers, real factors in social improvement.

The colored people often state that the colored professional men, lawyers and physicians, rather than the ministers and social workers, have been the real factors in the social improvement among the Negroes of Chicago.

The instance that the Frederick Douglass Center has staunch supporters among the professional men, that the president of their newly built YMCA is a colored physician, and that professional men are very active in the Chicago branch of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People.

Musicians of prominence.

It contains the standard equipment of gymnasium, restaurant, dormitories, etc.

and has a membership of 2,000, although the annual fee is $10.

Juvenile Officers and Social Workers Among the colored social workers of the city are five juvenile protection officers and one adult probation officer.

The county agent employed one colored investigator and the juvenile protective association, one colored officer.

A son of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Misick has devoted much of his professional and volunteer life to supporting vulnerable people and encouraging the development of the next generation of leaders.

His work has included serving as a Male CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Juvenile Manager, Social Worker, National Youth Advocate, and Probation Officer.

Through these roles and his community involvement, he has provided mentorship and support to vulnerable and at-risk young people while assisting families facing financial and other challenges.

Judges highlighted the broad scope of Misick's service, which ranges from food and family assistance to mentorship and youth development.

Well, thank you so much for having me, and I just love art events because you get to meet your people.

And, um, here in Pittsburgh, we always feel like we're one degree separated from social workers.

[laughs] Um, but yeah, you beautifully talked about my story in a concise way, but, um, I'm a born and raised Pittsburgher, a fifth-generation Pittsburgher.

Sometimes I sound like it, sometimes I don't.

Rogers talks about, you know? So came back home from a master's in social work for a focus in community organizing and social action, and I graduated right when COVID started.

I don't wish that on anybody.

But, you know, that point in time taught me how much social workers are needed.

But during that time, I really becan- became, um, more involved with understanding systems, people.
