What were the critics pointing out about how the media handled this?

We can look at critiques from publications like the SOS Spirit, which is a student newspaper from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.

They, along with other cultural critics, called this out as patronizing and anti-intellectual.

They termed it media misogyny.

So how should we employ it? Well, we started doing it, I started doing this way back in 1995 when I went to a course by a man named Dr.

Gerald Hawting at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the University of London.

And he started saying things that I'd never heard before.

See, I already had a master's degree in, uh, Islamics.

He believes the cost of breaking international norms have fallen so dramatically that countries are now encouraged to test the limits of what they can get away with, often with devastating consequences.

Dr Nick Westcott is now a Professor of Diplomacy at SOAS University of London and author of How to Be a Diplomat.

I'm delighted to have him as my guest today on The Diplomats.

Very glad to be here.

That means diplomacy is getting more complicated and harder, and there is more diplomacy that needs to be done, but actually fewer people doing it.

That's a very interesting position.

So as you say, it's getting harder and harder to be a diplomat.

King's was a success and I went off to King's in October 1988 and spent a very happy time there teaching general international law courses and getting very involved in the collaborative LLM program at London University because at the time London had a sort of collaborative LLM in which Kings, Queen Mary, LSE, UCL, SOAS, all taught a single LLM course.

So you were part of a much bigger community and actually a very vibrant community.

and you were there for four years.

And Principles of International Environmental Law came out in 1993, and that was my first textbook

Right.

And that was the year that you accepted a position at SOAS.

Yes.

Let's speak now to Professor Hazel Smith, a career expert at SOAS in the University of London.

Professor Smith, what do you make of the IAEA's announcement?

announcement?Well, it is part of its responsibility to try to monitor, uh, even those countries that are not covered by the, uh, non- non-prolif- prolif- nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

So it remains an open question whether or not he might try this in his second term.
