Minus the Emden, the Asia Squadron now consisted of four cruisers.

the larger sister cruisers, the SMS Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, and lighter cruisers, the SMS Leipzig and Nuremberg.

At the time, the Leipzig was on a visit to San Francisco on the west coast of the United States.

The light cruiser Nuremberg was sent to Hawaii to get news as undersea cables to the German islands had been cut.

On the 22nd of September, the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau bombed the port of Papeete on the island of Tahiti in search of coal supplies.

They sank a French gunboat, damaged the fortifications and parts of the town, but left with no coal.
