Other stuff, maybe some benching or something like that.
J

And then I'll come home, I'll do the squats, and then the other thing for as far as cardio supplement instead of running is the rowing machine.
J
6:19John O'BrienHOST
And I have a Concept 2 rower.
J
6:20John O'BrienHOST
I got it in 2020.
J
6:50John O'BrienHOST
And then I'll jump on that rower and do 2,000 meters.
J
6:54John O'BrienHOST
And I try to aim for, uh, around eight minutes, which I've been consistently doing for the last, you know, month and a half here when I started again.
J
7:04John O'BrienHOST
And I'm not sure if you've ever rowed before or if you have, uh, a rowing machine, but eight minutes of pure hell.
J
7:13John O'BrienHOST
It sucks.
#143 Reddit Rambles 16: When to add weight, ego lifting, and back pain on belt squats
C
15:04Cill O’ConnorHOST
This is a version of the 531 program, by the way.
C
15:09Cill O’ConnorHOST
The available options are hack squat, Smith machine squat, and a leg press.
C
15:14Cill O’ConnorHOST
I use them all as accessory movement before and never as a main lift.
C
15:18Cill O’ConnorHOST
I don't know how to use any of them as a temporary replacement in my program.
C
15:23Cill O’ConnorHOST
I'm leaning towards the Smith machine as it resembles a barbell squat more, but I would really appreciate your takes.
C
15:30Cill O’ConnorHOST
So given that the exercise that the person is trying to replicate here is a back squat, I would say off the bat leg press I definitely wouldn't use as the substitute.
C
15:42Cill O’ConnorHOST
Leg press can be a good exercise for building up quad mass and strength.
C
16:05Cill O’ConnorHOST
And you got them under a squat bar and they were struggling with beginner weights on us despite maxing out the leg press.

systems for things like lat pulldowns tricep extensions like cable crunches kind of but not really like it is predominantly a cable of some sort now you will get rudimentary like leg presses Like the overhead leg press, you know, where the weight is over you and you're kind of sitting up underneath it.
C
71:48Conor HeffernanGUEST
It's like a Smith machine bar and you lay on your back.
C

Smith machine bar, but yeah, 100%.

So the exercises were barbell hip thrust, a Bulgarian split squat called Bulgarian split squat multi-power was the quote.
J
12:33Jason TuoriHOST
It's basically Smith machine rear foot elevated split squat, it looks like.
J
12:38Jason TuoriHOST
Yes.
J
12:38Jason TuoriHOST
A clamshell with elastic band above the knees.
M
17:32Megan GrahamHOST
Yeah.
J
17:34Jason TuoriHOST
I don't know that that's what this is unless they just love hip thrusts and Bulgarian split squats here.
J
17:42Jason TuoriHOST
Now, all of that said, I don't mind the hip thrust and the Smith Machine Bulgarian split squat in this study because both of them do take some of the balance and skill demands away from... what they otherwise could have experienced because if you think like well switch the hip thrust with a trap bar deadlift or as an rdl maybe you do probably have one increased layer of like well these are 17 year old kids do we need to teach them how to deadlift before they actually start pulling some weight or can we just put a bar across the front of their hips yeah or
M

even like a leg press or something yeah
The Great Dane & Many New GMWD Machines
J

Uh, but this one is another, you can, you can, um, change the cable ratios from two to one or one to one not exactly sure how to do that but basically what what they want to do is integrate a lat pull down low row with one to one and then also uh functional trainer components on each of the posts uh so It's also a six-post half rack.
J
19:25JakeHOST
Six-post half rack with a Smith machine integrated as well.
J
19:30JakeHOST
So, yeah, they're calling it a half rack, but it does have six posts.
J
19:34JakeHOST
But, yeah, this one is a pretty appealing option, I think, for anybody entering the market.
M
20:03MichaelHOST
That you're seeing on that right upright down towards the bottom.
M
20:07MichaelHOST
So it's a unique take on what we're seeing most of these companies kind of transition to, which is offering variable ratios.
M
20:17MichaelHOST
But most of them, I think all of, if not all of them, have done some type of a... switch or like the dial from Vesta but with the Great Dane it's just configured that way and you're right it is a it is a large half rack but it is it's got a lot of stuff in there it's got the Smith machine I'm really they've also said that that low row pulley can be moved a little bit higher if you prefer that obviously that will impact how low you can get the trolley on that side Are they taking pre-orders for it already, or is it just up? I think

It can feel very exciting, but like novelty and something being exciting doesn't necessarily mean it produces the right result that you're looking for and like yeah it might feel a little boring you know doing the same workouts pretty much you know monday tuesday wednesday or whatever days you're doing them you know for a couple of months in a row but like you said when you see the actual physical change and you see the actual like strength progression you get from that It like the quote unquote repetitiveness like actually is worth it because you're getting so much better of result out of it.
J
33:45Joey GastHOST
And so you you when you started coaching to you did have did you just have like just dumbbells and then you ended up getting like a full on like Smith machine or not Smith machine, but cable machine and rack and everything like along the way.

So do some work that's more mid range and shortened, right? Like start one of your sessions with a fly that's loaded, shortened, and maybe you don't use that prime machine.
J
20:27John JewettHOST
Maybe you stay in the Smith machine for that session.
J
20:30John JewettHOST
And then you have the other session where you do more, more LinkedIn load.

J

They're comfortable for me doing barbell, dumbbells.
J
17:17John ZombrowHOST
I enjoy kettlebell pressing, sometimes even on the Smith machine, but I'm going to go with a low incline.
J
17:25John ZombrowHOST
So basically that depends on the bench, but it's like the first notch, just a little bit above flat.
J
17:30John ZombrowHOST
I feel like that gives me a little better focus across all the chest muscles and the shoulders, anterior delts in particular, than a flat bench will.
"Ahead of His Time" - Matt Carpenter Interviewed by Scott Jurek
M

I, I biked from my house in Manitou up to Mount Rushmore and, uh, biked another time to, to, uh, Phoenix.
M
28:43Matt CarpenterGUEST
And now I was, I, in November they, or December, they opened a new Planet Fitness, and I went down there and I was playing around on this Smith machine, and I could only bench 80 pounds, and I'm like, "Good God, that sucks." And so I'm like, I, I, I like, "This can't be." And so I, I'm like, "No, I can bench more than that." So I brought in my luggage weigh and I'm checking out the bars, and sure enough, the bar that's supposed to weigh 25 pounds empty actually weighed like 35.
M
29:12Matt CarpenterGUEST
So I'd actually benched 90, which still sucks.
M
29:15Matt CarpenterGUEST
So I'm like, "Okay, here it is January 12th.

No, but yeah, I got, I went over, I, I gave up on the Smith machine because that kind of i- inconsistency just pisses me off.
M
29:39Matt CarpenterGUEST
So I went to free weights, and the bar on that one's 20 cl- 20K, which is 44 pounds.
