Smith Island

You know, they, um, hunted up and down the Bay, and really was to survive and to eat.

So as he did that, he went, um, down the Bay through Calvert County, which is where I live, Tilghman Island, down through, you know, Cambridge, Hoopers Island, you know, um, Smith Island, and down Holland's Island, which is now underwater.

And he knew all these hunters, and he, you know, they helped him, taught him the trade.

And so he became very good friends with them over the years, and they shot [laughs] a lot of ducks and geese.

[laughs]

Well, and that's the, you hit the nail on the head, and that's why, you know, if you go down through, you know, where I grew up in this area, you know, there was law enforcement, DNR back in the day, you know, and I'm an older guy [laughs] now, but this goes back to when my dad was a kid in the '30s to '40s and stuff.

But these islands are very, you know, hard to get to, Smith Island and all the others, and so there wasn't a law, a lot of law down there.

And if they did show up, it was a very dangerous place if you were a Fish and Wildlife officer, you know, and everybody knew e- everybody, and somebody that they didn't know stuck out pretty quickly, so.

And then the next part, I get into the land of the Redwoods, an amazing story there.

Old England and the Chesapeake Bay, which is Smith Island, Maryland.

Guy I met with, his family's been there for 374 years.

and a few other chapters that really touch on that contrast juxtaposition of you think you know America? Okay, let me show you this.

We don't really get a lot of tailing reds.

Yeah, so you think Bloodsworth, you think Smith Island, and that stretch down to Tangier.

When you get closer to Tangier, you're going to be able to find shallow tailing reds.

It doesn't happen a ton.

Yeah.

Have you ever had a Smith Island cake? Do you know?

No.

It's a Maryland thing.

It's really, really good.

One year for my birthday, I was in Maryland and I was like, I want a Smith Island cake.

We went to Applebee's and I was like, I want Smith Island cake for dessert.
