And also, I think I may have mentioned when we covered Spider-Land, but I think it's worth noting again that Will Oldham snapped the quarry photo that became the album cover of the band Slint's album Spider-Land, which we also talked about on this podcast.

So Will Oldham has performed...

He performed in one of the arguably best albums of the 1990s, and he's also done the visual art for a different one of possibly the best albums of the 90s.

Is there anyone else like them?

I said not in like British bands, I think they were probably influenced by American bands like Slint and Ariel M who were sort of early like post-rock as they call it, but I can't think of anyone that does that kind of music that's been as successful, you know, they're almost a mainstream band, you know, they're very well known and do lots of soundtracks and things but to have achieved a pretty good level of success doing mostly instrumental music I think I can't think of anyone else that's achieved that doing that kind of music

Yeah, when Stuart came on, it would have been about, I reckon, about three years ago.

And they just had a huge album the year before.

They, uh, especially on their first three albums, do a lot of that spoken word style.

And other post-punk bands like, like Slint, they all love to do stuff like that.

As well as a lot of emo songs actually as well do a little spoken word bridge here and there.

I, I just love it.

And there was a place called Tuligan's Tavern, which was sort of the CBGB of Louisville in the early 80s.

There were bands like Squirrel Bait and Love Jones and Slint that came out of that scene, 11th Dream Day.

Folks on Fire was one.

Yeah, I mean, I think that's interesting because, like, if you look at the timeline, like, Will Oldham doesn't really fit one mold, right? And Slint doesn't really.

Yeah.

I don't know.

The band very rarely have temperament to do anything this burr.

It's perhaps the most dynamic in the repertoire and arguably sets the template for post-rockers like Slint.

Like Slint? Like Slint.

Yeah.

He played me the Slint record, I think from the 90s, which is pretty angular and aggressive and non-melodic sounding.

So he didn't think we would get that far, but he was hoping it could pull us in that direction.

It must have been an interesting experience for them, too, probably working together on a record, if they hadn't done that before.
