Jon RonsonGUEST
38:06
You know, it's funny.
Jon RonsonGUEST
38:08
Last night I had a question at Barry St Edmunds when someone said, well, how are you different from a content creator? And this was a question that came on Slido so I could choose which questions to answer.
Jon RonsonGUEST
38:19
And I didn't answer that question because I just didn't really know what to say.
Jon RonsonGUEST
38:23
But there are differences between working, between being a content creator and being, you know, working in the more kind of established structures.
Gemma TetlowHOST
0:44
I'm going to start by asking my colleagues a few questions, but we want to answer your questions as well.
Gemma TetlowHOST
0:48
So please do start putting those in Slido and do upvote anything that's already there that you would like us to answer.
Gemma TetlowHOST
0:55
Dan, let me start with you.
Gemma TetlowHOST

There was lots of discussion in the run-up to this budget about how the outlook had changed since the spring when the OBR last made their forecast, how the Iran war and rising interest rates were causing problems for the government.

Dan HailePANELIST

I guess the other thing that's really encouraging and builds slightly on what we've just been talking about is that there are big commitments in there for mayors to have lots of flexibility about how they then spend that money, which I think is something that we've called for in the past.
Dan HailePANELIST
24:24
The more ring fences, the more little rules, the more... oversight you try and have of like specifically what each spending each bit of spending is spent on the the less easy it is for for mayors and other layers of government to be able to prioritize effectively across their responsibilities so yeah i think there's there's some really exciting stuff in there um the devil is in the detail as we would always say but this feels like a really uh a really sensible next step um so yeah lots to lots to lots to like there
Gemma TetlowHOST
24:54
And just to pick up on a question that's coming on Slido, what's your take on what we know so far about how the government's planning to deal with equalisation across areas versus the incentives to grow and keep tax?
Dan HailePANELIST
25:06
So I think they've slightly pushed this one.

So let's welcome our panellists to the stage now and welcome our convener Dev Singh back on stage to moderate and put to our panellists the questions our delegates have provided on Silo.

23 MINS LATER

Tanya BuchananGUEST
24:21
So I would almost roll it back and say, what is it we're trying to achieve? And then start to ask, does this system we're building achieve those outcomes?
Dev SinghHOST
24:31
Professor Irene, coming to you.
Dev SinghHOST
1:45
Thank you for all joining us back in the room and online.
Dev SinghHOST
1:48
Can I also request, when you go on Slido, if you don't have a question, but please do visit Slido because you might like a question and you can do a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
Dev SinghHOST
1:57
So the more people can do a thumbs up, so the question goes on the top on the priority, so I can ask that question.
Dev SinghHOST
2:02
So it gives the voice of the room in a way by doing a thumbs up to the questions.

10 MINS LATER

Stephen DunsGUEST
12:05
And so just as you said, we need to do something about some of the financial incentives, some of the straight payroll, but also developing people so they can step into the roles that will allow them to stay in the profession to start to reduce that gap from a retention perspective as opposed to an attraction perspective.
Dev SinghHOST
12:25
Thank you.
Dev SinghHOST
12:26
Sandra, can I come to you? And then the question from Slido as well.
Dev SinghHOST
12:34
Can you talk about the demographic and the breakup of your workforce right now? And what are the methods you're using to source good workforce and retain them and maintain them?
Gavin FreegardHOST

Dave JamesGUEST
30:00
But what they're doing is they're showing their expertise and they're showing their expertise applied to an audience rather than just delivering a keynote, which, to be honest, they could have done as a PDF.
