Sleeper

[laughs] I w-- That's one, um, slightly satirical way to look at this.

I wanna point out the, the, uh, visionary, uh, dystopian film of 1972 made by the, um, somewhat disreputable Woody Allen, but one of the five funniest movies ever made, "Sleeper," uh, where Woody Allen wakes up 200 years in the future in a dystopian dictatorship and, uh, somehow manages to find himself in an operating room pretending to be a doctor.

And what it turns out is that the leader of the country, who is seen in, in, um, in long shot in videos in a wheelchair with a dog sitting next to him in shadow, uh, that the leader has been the ta-target of an assassination attempt, and that the only thing left of the leader is his nose, and that Woody Allen and Diane Keaton are believed to be the doctors whose job it will be to clone the leader from his nose.

And little did I know that "Sleeper" might in fact be a documentary 50 years early to describe the circumstances in Iran.

I bring this up only to say that everything that we are hearing and reading and seeing about whether or not oil prices are spiking or the Saudis are doing that, the Houthis are doing that or something or other is, that Iran, the nation of Iran, this is not secure for the world that this is the case.

It's clearly in a state of complete chaos in which individual people with individual sources of power and individual weapons, because maybe some people in the Navy have control over the weapons that can be fired at ships, whereas some people in a different part of the IRGC might have control of the radio sonic ballistics and so on.

What's bad is good.

In his 1973 movie Sleeper, Woody Allen's character is cryogenically frozen before he's revived 200 years later.

The world is now very different.

Yes, his VW Beetle car still starts first time, but health advice has been turned on its head.

She teamed with Woody Allen for the 1972 film version of Play It Again, Sam, toggling back and forth between working with Allen and Francis Ford Coppola.

She co-starred with the former in 1973's Sleeper, returned as Kay Adams in the latter's The Godfather Part II in 1974, and then went back to Allen for 1975's Love and Death.

After a couple of misses, she re-teamed with Allen for 1977's Annie Hall, which won numerous Academy Awards, Best Picture, Best Director for Allen, and Best Actress for Keaton.

Her performance and look in the film became iconic and went on to inspire numerous actresses.

Yeah, yeah.

It's kinda like that Woody Allen movie Sleeper where there are the people who are kind of in the forest that were the rebels, and then the technological futuristic people li- kinda living underground and...

But it's the idea, I guess, that, that you can move past those two polarities to something that all works together.

Yeah, I don't think that's gonna be an easy thing, but it's a nice, it's a nice fantasy and who knows? Who knows how it's all gonna play out.
