Skeleton Coast

The main villain of the movie is of course Imhotep, as played by Arnold Vosloo, a South African character actor who'd actually been working for almost two decades in film and television when this movie made him a famous name, and who'd been working even longer than that as a stage actor.

Most of those pre-Mummy roles were in lower budget movies like Gore and Steel Dawn and Skeleton Coast and Buried Alive and Reason to Die and The Revenger and Killer Instinct and I kind of love this phase of his career.

And although he did get some higher-profile roles with his appearance in the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie Hard Target and his work on the two direct-to-video Darkman sequels, he reprised the role originated by Liam Neeson, it was really the mummy that brought him to the public's attention.

He kept going on from strength to strength after that with Veritas the Quest and Stephen Sommers' G.I. Joe movies, he was Sartan, which is kind of funny if you know anything about Darkman, and in short, he's just never been out of work in the last 40 years.

But the object turned out to be a copper ingot connected to a Portuguese ship called the Bom Jesus, or Good Jesus in English, which disappeared in fifteen thirty-three while sailing toward India.

The discovery eventually led to the remains of the ship buried along Namibia's Skeleton Coast.

Among the items recovered were twenty-two tons of copper, along with gold, ivory, and other artifacts.

The discovery became one of the most important shipwreck finds ever made along the western coast of Africa.

It was just spine tingling.

Uh, and one of the other places I've always, always wanted to go for, I'm not quite sure what reason, is Namibia and the Skeleton Coast.

So maybe one day I'll make it over there.

I really find this question quite difficult to answer.

We set off, I think, about 3,000 kilometers around Namibia over three weeks, just looking and, in a way, setting up a program.

And one day, we were driving along the Skeleton Coast, and it was late.

We'd had a puncture, which had delayed us, and we got to a camp, and there were armored vehicles in front of the camp.

And they said, well, you can't come in.

Shooting around the world is fantastic when you're there for a reason.

We're in Namibia because it's the Skeleton Coast, and they have all these abandoned German diamond factories that look nothing like anything else in, in the world.

And we shot in Spain for the architecture, Singapore, same reason.

But shooting somewhere just to save someone else money is cynical.

Stuart Copeland told us his favorite animal was the hyena.
