While the standalone Quest 3 build is considered fully functional and playable, the headset's mobile GPU is pushed to its limits, Big Mac says.

Yeah, I've been thinking about this a bunch.

Pierre Liu, actually, in one of the interviews, I can't remember which one he did, he goes into this a little bit, and I was reading these words the very same day that I watched somebody point to the UE4, I think it is, 6DOF mod that's on GitHub.

If you have an Unreal Engine game running in a flat window, which you already could with the Steam frame, just have it running in a flat virtual window inside the headset, or in your Vision Pro, or in your Oculus, imagine if you could move your head around and see through that window with its view changing like it is a portal into another world where your game exists not just a flat window where i'm like oh i'm looking at a flat screen but you are looking into a portal into your game expedition 33 or any other unreal engine game um I fired it up, tried to get it working on Steam Frame, something about either the compositor or the detection of the headset.

Facebook's coming out with this Quest device, standalone 6DoF VR." And then we went from the Lenovo Mirage, which was just 6DoF headset with a 3DoF controller, and then we were starting to prototype these, uh, 6DoF controllers, and it was like, "Great, it's gonna be Google and Meta competing with each other." And then Google was like, "Never mind," and just gave up on that.

And so Meta didn't have a lot of competition.

And right now, between things Pico's doing and Meta and Valve and Apple and everything with Android XR across the spectrum with XReal and Samsung and Google, there's some really healthy competition, and I think it is pushing everyone to create better products and improve their OSs.
