Sister city

It's funny because Melbourne, given the massive outpouring of support for the 49ers from that city, given the fact that I pointed out that Richmond, the neighborhood in Melbourne, is actually the namesake for the Richmond district in San Francisco, given the fact that the same trams run on tracks in both cities.

Melbourne, with its flavor and its neighborhoods, could qualify as a sister city of San Francisco as well.

But Sydney is the one that officially has that designation.

It's like a cool blend of the best of Southern California with obviously what people love about Northern California and San Francisco in this city.

If two cities could be partners or sisters, they could work together to create a more peaceful world.

Our home station KUT News got a question about Austin's sister cities.

KUT's Luz Moreno-Lazano has the

answer.

So right off the bat, the person who asked this question actually knows a lot about the answer, but she wants more people to know.

From her hotel room back in June, Christy Bryant was on a Zoom call with me.

She was in between sessions at some kind of sister cities-related conference.

But she was also there because Austin was welcoming another sister to the family, Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom.

We got a question about Austin's sister cities for our AT Explained project.

You didn't watch Parks and Rec, right? No.

There's this episode of Sister City, and the Sister City people come to visit, and they're talking about how in their country, it's like, probably not, doesn't hold up today, but in their country, they're like, you do anything wrong, you go straight to jail.

And that's how I feel about side notes.

Come on.

We, we need to, Gareth, we need to get rid of sister cities.

I mean, that's the load, biggest load of shite in the world, isn't it? No one gets anything out of a sister city.

Well, I mean, and look, if you're gonna go on a bit of a junket like this, and then you say you don't really like the sister cities, it does look absolutely inconsistent.

Um, gosh, I mean, why on earth didn't the mayor just say she was doing other work while she was over there? You know, we're not talking about a huge amount of money here, 2,500 bucks.

You know, I do support mayors, you know, going overseas, learning, telling their city stories, drumming up business for the local jobs, but I didn't hear any of that.
