Jonathan Edwards is a perfect example.

If you read his story, you will come to a place where he preached a sermon that became famous, a sermon called Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

He read his sermons word for word.

He hardly ever looked up from his manuscript.

But when he preached the sermon like that, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, people cried out in terror.

And those who were there said they felt as if they were being dangled over hell as they heard the gospel, many of them for the first time.

So there was a preacher, and Jonah was the preacher.

Um, another sermon that I like to listen to...

Well, this one's a little harder because it's not the person preaching it, but I actually like to listen to Max, um, Max McLean's version of Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

It's not, obviously, Jonathan Edwards.

There's no recording of Jonathan Edwards preaching it, but Max McLean is a voice actor, and he reads Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, and it's incredible.

Mm.

So those two would probably be, like, my go-to, like, ones.

But this would seem to me to be, in many scholars, a verifiable, true, real revival in which many multitudes of people came to Christ and got saved.

In 1741, Edwards is going to preach his most famous sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

But later, just a few years later, after the revival is beginning to wane a bit, he's going to fall into some trouble with what's called the Bad Book Case.

This is really a pastoral blunder on Edwards' part, where he kind of gets in trouble with the congregation because...

We have Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, and we have Heaven is a World of Love, which is interesting because it's Edwards' theology of hell and heaven, respectively.

Okay, so those would be Jonathan Edwards' theological emphases.

In the town of Northampton, Reverend Jonathan Edwards delivered a series of fiery sermons seeking to restore the region's commitment and dedication to religion.

In his famous 1741 sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Edward gives a classic fire-and-brimstone performance.

He said, quote, "The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over fire, abhors you and is dreadfully provoked.

You hang by a slender thread with the flames of divine wrath flashing about it and ready every moment to singe it and burn it asunder." End quote.

And yet we're in proud rebellion against him.

Jonathan Edwards famously preached a sermon titled Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

Weighty title, right? And he captures kind of the essence of his sermon in these words.

He says this.

He looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire.

And this comes from his book, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

The title alone, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, is in complete defiance.

of the gospel because God would never refer to you that way.

And he doesn't have angry hands.
