I met a woman at the record store recently, and we got to talking about Glenn Hansard as we, uh, had a record of his displayed in the store, and she mentioned John Carney, the film director responsible for Once, Begin Again, Sing Street, and this year's film, Power Ballad, and it turns out her son wrote a song that made it onto that film.

How cool is that? And I wo- I wonder if that's a lucrative thing these days.

Th- I saw the movie.

It was perfectly enjoyable.

I don't think it held a candle to those other ones that he's done before, like Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street.

And then also John Carney, of course, you have to check out like his entire filmography, right? You mentioned once.

I will throw out there both Sing Street and Power Ballad.

Don't know if you saw that one from the show.

I know Jakob loved it.

I was sitting there like on the verge of tears.

Both incredible songs or incredible films about singers.

Sing Street about a young kid starting a band who just wants to break free and have freedom.

Power Ballad, very different about this aging man who has a family who wants to taste that freedom and that power and that excitement of youth again.

So this is the new film from writer, director John Carney and any film that Carney makes.

I'm going to go and see because after the brilliance of Once and Sing Street, I genuinely feel like John Carney has a magic touch when it comes to making films about the impact and importance.

of music in regular people's lives.

He's a brilliant writer and also a brilliant songwriter because some of the songs he's written in the past, I think, are better than a lot of pop songs.

And that saying where there's a hit, there's a writ.

is very much about this movie it really is um you know so i think what you have with this movie is on the surface a story about people trying to achieve their dreams no matter their age still trying to work at those dreams but underneath those dreams you know the glitz and the glamour whether it's you know playing to thousands or whether it's playing to uh you know 50 people at a wedding underneath all of that glitz and glamour there This movie is about the cutthroat world of trying to stay on top, to make sure you stay on top, whatever way you have to do it, which I think is really interesting.

You know, you're going to enjoy this movie because it's fun, but dig deeper than that, you're going to find quite a nasty... taste as well as to what people will do to stay on top so look i don't think it's john carney's best movie that by the way that's once closely followed by sing street however i think it is a lovely easygoing film that sort of hums away as i said lots of entertainment lots of humor lots of funny moments but it's also a really insightful film about the highs and lows of not just working in the music industry but trying to make it in the music industry and also trying to stay on top as well so yeah it's it's a film that's got a lot going for it a lot going for it

So, and Sing Street is the other one that, that he's directed.

So it's all these Irish set movies that have music or something about music.

Mm-hmm.

First one, one I'm very, very excited, got this type of treatment.

Are you kidding me? Sing Street? I love me some Sing Street, man.

I love the director.

He also directed Wants, and he also directed Power Ballad, the movie that just came out this year with Nick Jonas and Paul Rudd.

Uh, this movie though, this, I'm a big fan of coming of age movies and this one hits a sweet spot of just kind of like getting in the fields, but in the best way possible and just capturing that high school angst that everybody really has trying to figure everything out about everything from your body to your feelings to high school, just a whole bunch of everything in here.

Um, I like how they made like a replica book of what he would have the main character would have in the movie that's kind of cool um love to see this um i have not watched this 4k yet and that's shame on me but i cannot wait to finally change that and do so because i enjoy this movie very very much highly recommend sing street if you have not seen it Here's a documentary that I have not seen, but anything directed by Ken Burns is something that is on my radar because I love a lot of things that that man has directed.
