Silage

Woo! because it's where I am debuting a brand new project.

That's right, it's my new romance novel, A Tryst Among the Silage.

It's about a young professional woman, Vanessa Promotion, who takes a short holiday to the countryside, little expecting that she's about to fall in love with the thick-armed muck spreader at the local cabbage farm.

It's passionate, spicy, and best of all, completely unchallenging.

I won't.

Well, apologies for all that faff, everyone, but things seem to have calmed down a bit now, so with any luck, we should be able to get on with the reading.

So, let's put all that time-hopping nonsense out of our minds and focus on the present day, where we take you on a cleansing journey to County Killpudding, Shropshireland, where we will have our minds metaphorically wiped clean by the fresh country air and have our bodies metaphorically ploughed into the sod by a horny-handed labourer In A Tryst Among the Silage by me, Tom Crowley.

Chapter one.

And my stick was mislaid where I dozed in the shade, and I waded in brooks and neglected my books, and I startled her hair, and the taste of that pear! What a waste, what a glorious waste! Or listen to this one, Autumn Harvest.

Wet leaves littering an unmown lawn, Grey clouds scudding from the hills, Coal-black rooks in rain-soaked fields, Blue bottles dozing on the sills, Thorn-haws glowing in a glittering hedge, Fox-paws printed in the mud, Sickle-winged swifts and swallows in the mist, Africa singing in their blood, Drunk brown wasps on a windfall cocks, Fat lambs bleating at the ramp, Shy chanterelles under moss-backed stones, Silage spilling from the clamp.

Damp fog silvering a new ploughed field, Urchins drowning in the brooks, Deep-armed chairs by an ash-log fire, Bacchae and bourbon and books.

And I'm struck by that last line.

it clean.

They can clean, like, because, like, when rain hits Silage, like, you will have effluent coming off it, like, and then when it's diluted, we call it salt water.

So it is an issue, like, and because, you know, farmyards are getting bigger, like, Silage pits are getting correspondingly bigger.

So there is issues around that, you know.

Yeah, yeah, listen, thanks very much.

And what we would really, really recommend is that farmers would have a sufficient amount of concrete area with the channels in place that they can manage all their silage at that height.

which means that it is a safer method of getting it down.

And, you know, there are examples there, unfortunately, of farmers that have taken down bales and have been unwrapping them in the Silage Pit area and other bales have fallen down.

Okay.

I, I saw, again, it was in Manitoba, so not fair, but I did see my first fields of corn silage going down, uh, just south of Winnipeg.

Um, what about here in Ontario? How are we doing for silage harvest, and what are we seeing in the silage crop?

Uh, so f- a couple of notes.

And, and this is almost on a alert, alert, alert, because the corn silage looks to be drying down very quickly, so almost at a rate of 1% per day.

Now, I have to be really careful because I'm sure there's areas it's not drying down that fast.

Right.

Now, I will say that we've had lots of heavy dues, and that maybe slows that process a bit.

Like looking for

fields? So you just cruise the fields and look for people who cut silage, basically.

Silage or weeds, though, yeah.

I don't see any weeds.

It's all done.

And that's kind of in my extension program, trying to add value to calves.

And I found in corn silage, one of the best tools to do that, with a lot of caveats to that, like protein supplementation being the number one.

Martin, we don't follow Martin around the place, but...

No, I remember seeing my uncle had them for years at Silage, and I suppose my father would have drove them, and I'm only young for that, but I bought my one to go on the Munster Run, It was just something that I thought I'd like to do.

We found the tractor I bought, which is rare.

It's a four-wheel drive model.
