Uh, there's ulterior motives, um, which is, is difficult.

Um, what frustrates me a little bit in academia with SIL is that, um, they are also the shepherds of the ISO 639-3 codes and also-

... another data set on writing systems and a bunch of those.

And, uh, yeah, as long as it's a bit more transparent, I think I'd be a bit more, a bit more chill with it.

Yeah.

I have to say, though, I have some friends who are SIL linguists who do great work.

Like, [chuckles] it's-

There's no single authority.

The closest thing to a global standard is ISO six thirty-nine dash three, maintained by SIL International.

That's the catalog of language codes.

Ethnologue is the most widely cited reference.

Not only in America, but sending missionaries to the other parts of the world.

And they sent, I think that SIL International sent evaluators from Canada.

And they did the evaluation, and they found out that this was a very remarkable model, that it was very successful.

So, you know, one of the meetings that I was invited to, it was in Seed Company.
