This podcast is created on the current and traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy, comprised of the Siksika, the Bikini, and the Kainai First Nations, the Tsutina First Nation, and the Stony Nakota, including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Good Stony First Nations, as well as the Métis Nation within Alberta, including Nose Hill Métis District 5 and Elba Métis District 6, whose knowledge systems and approaches to understanding our world have sustained communities for thousands of years.

As we approach new technologies and ways of knowing through AI, we recognize the importance of diverse perspectives and the wisdom embedded in established knowledge systems that have long preceded any digital innovations.

These gentlemen, uh, Tom Kehoe worked at Browning in Montana.

Hugh Dempsey was married to a Siksika and worked closely with the First Nations up here in Canada, and this is back in the '50s.

They recorded all these oral traditions.

Dempsey actually recorded the word for the, that actual structure, that Blackfoot medicine wheel, the death lodge, and I can't even try to pronounce it.

I've been adopted into the Blackfoot First Nations, so to speak.

I have a Blackfoot name, and I have a really good rapport with a number of folks on...

We have three tribes up here in Alberta, so we have Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai.

And so I have an, I have good relationships with a number of folks on tho- in those groups.

So tonight, the Breakdown is recording this on Treaty 7 territory, traditional meeting grounds, gathering place, and traveling route of the Blackfoot Nations, which include the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani First Nations, as well as the Stoney Nakoda First Nations and the Tsuut'ina First Nation.

In 1938, before he even wrote his famous paper, he spent time living with the Siksika Nation, which is a part of the Blackfoot Confederacy in Canada.

This is a piece of history that rarely gets taught.

What was he doing out there?

He went on an anthropological field trip to study their society, and what he observed profoundly shocked him.

He came from this highly competitive, individualistic, aggressive American culture.

But in the Siksika Nation, he found a society that was highly cooperative, deeply generous, and remarkably peaceful.
