What is the most cultivated grape variety in France? Is it A, Pinot Noir, of Burgundy and Champagne fame? Is it B, Chardonnay, also of Burgundy and Champagne fame, and hello, Chablis? What about C, Cabernet Sauvignon of Bordeaux legends? Or D, the Rhone Valley's Syrah? Or E, Merlot of Right Bank, Bordeaux Legends.

And the movie Sideways, Scorn.

So of course it's E, Merlot, since it's in the name of this episode and you clearly clicked on it.

Or you maybe just like the way I spelled the F word.

Or maybe you're one of those people like Paul Giamatti's character Miles in the 2004 film Sideways.

And I quote, if anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving.

I'm not drinking any fucking Merlot.

Yeah, it's not my favorite part of it.

That leads to the all-time great scene in Sideways where they give Giamatti another pour, so he just takes the spittoon and

starts drinking straight out of it.

By the way, you know that movie, he does not like Merlot.

It's right in the middle of wine country.

And if anybody has seen the movie Sideways, which came out very, very early in the 2000s, that's where the movie was shot.

So it's known as a Danish capital of wine.

Thomas Hayden Church and Paul Giamatti, they're the same people at the end of the movie as they were at the beginning of the movie.

Hayden Church is going to fuck around on his wife the whole rest of his life.

I'm trying to read my own notes here because I wrote down what won things here.

And it looks like Sideways won two Critics Awards, one from the Vancouver Critics, one from the Toronto Critics.

And then there were a couple of the directors won horror film festival awards.

If you're looking for a film with an uplifting message about going through the dark night of the soul and coming out the other side, Wild is a really great example of that type of movie that will give you that kick.

The film Sideways from 2004 has two gentlemen going through a midlife crisis, but dealing with it in different ways.

Paul Giamatti's Miles is withdrawn due to having so many failures in his life, especially in the creative front, while the more socially successful Jack, played by Thomas Hayden Church, goes through the adolescent version of the midlife crisis by trying to bang every piece of tail he can get his hands on, even when he's about to marry somebody else.

Both of them hook up with a couple of women in the Solvang area of California, an area that I know well, Matt, I view as well.
