Sid Caesar

exactly exactly so uh yeah this is uh it's exciting because i've seen this movie many many many times in its entirety and in hunks and in clips so i know it pretty well and to see it through the eyes of someone who has never seen it that's sort of what the basis of this show was when we started it so this week's movie is it's a mad mad mad mad world directed by Stanley Kramer and written by British authors William and Tanya Rose.

It has Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Jonathan Winters, Phil Silvers, Don Knotts, Dorothy Provine, Dick Shawn, Terry Thomas, Edie Adams, Jimmy Durante, and just about everyone else in Hollywood.

It was released by United Artists in 1963, although there are several edits floating around that you can grab.

We went with the extended reconstructed version that runs three hours and 17 minutes with an intermission.

So tough.

Anyway, they're in a blue Chrysler Imperial convertible.

Behind them in a green Plymouth station wagon is Melville Crump, Sid Caesar, who is a dentist in the movie.

Anything for Sid Caesar? No.

And, you know, I worked with I did.

movie of the week called Seventh Avenue about the garment industry with Sid Caesar.

And I had two scenes with Sid Caesar and Sid Caesar would just sit off before he was on.

He'd sit off camera and lean on his cane and like just nothing was going on.

He didn't talk to anybody.

He was very, very quiet.

And then you get him on the, you know, the cameras rolling.

And because I had to fire Sid Caesar from that, you know, that was my job.

Although, you know, they do crop up.

I mean, there's a famous one is Mel Brooks and the Producers, which was based on a script that was written for the Marx Brothers that Mel Brooks found when he and Woody Allen were working on Show of Shows for Sid Caesar.

Apparently, it was just lying in a drawer.

And that's how the whole thing started.
