On June 1, 1987, a 16-year-old young lady from Fresno, California, named Teresa Ann Beer, decided to go on a camping trip in a very remote area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains called Shuteye Peak, located approximately 25 miles northeast of Bass Lake.

A 43-year-old man named Russell Welch accompanied Teresa on this trip.
