Shropshire sheep

that was a really interesting and I never knew that belted Galloways were considered rare certainly I've always felt you see plenty of them I had some as a child as a Christmas present from Santa one year I know that's a really good point how disease can affect breeds like that foot and mouth knock them into rare status I mean, has there been any other breeds that were closer to kind of rare status or that than people realised as a kind of, you know, breeds that we kind of take for granted just now that at one point were rare?

I think certainly one of the more commercially minded sheep, the Shropshire sheep, they were considered to be on the brink of extinction in the 1970s.

So really just when the RBST formed.

And again, thankfully, as I keep saying, through work from the RBST and also work through breeders in the society, they're now no longer categorised or considered rare.

So really, if it wasn't for the valiant effort of those people at that time, we could have well lost the Shropshire sheep.

Another one would be the Shetland sheep, obviously from Shetland.

Again, it was another severely endangered breed in the 1970s, and it moved out of the rare watch list category in 2002. um it's not going to be it's not commercial in the sense and we don't count it as any other native breed but at least it is stable and that's really what we can ask for that there are breeds that are stable within numbers um going forward to ensure that they have future survival
