Shrine of the Book

Historians believe a Jewish group called the Essenes lived nearby and they hid the scrolls in those caves around AD 68, right as a Roman army was closing in.

The Great Isaiah Scroll was one of the original seven found in the very first cave and it belongs to the nation of Israel now and it's kept at a museum in Jerusalem called the Shrine of the Book.

though the real one stays in a tightly controlled storage most of the time and only comes out for special limited exhibitions.

Now, what visitors normally see is this domed room, and in that, there's this reproduction of it, which is what I saw, but I'll tell you, it is equally impressive.

And that raises a bigger question than simply, what am I looking at? It's this.

It's whose voice am I allowing to shape me? When I was in Qumran looking at those caves, I was standing in the place where someone hid a scroll in a jar because it was too valuable to lose.

Standing in the shrine of the book museum, I was looking at a reproduction of that same scroll, resting in its own case built two-thirds underground just to hold it.

You know, from the outside when I was there, I wondered why the building itself was unusually shaped like a big white dome.

And he will rebuke many nations.

These are the words that Netanyahu read to Obama when they went to the Shrine of the Book and stood before the Isaiah Scroll.

He read it from the Isaiah Scroll written 2,200 years ago in Israel's National Museum.

And they will beat their swords in the plowshares.
