1982 gave us Combat Rock, which was their biggest commercial success, and it included their hits Rock the Casbah.

At that time, internal tensions, Topper Heaton's dismissal due to heroin addiction and later McJones' departure weakened the band.

Cut the Crap, their final studio album, was recorded in 1985 and released in 1986, and it was turbulent to say the least.

So on the charts from this album, Train in Vain was the only song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

It spent 14 weeks on that chart, peaked at number 23.

They only had two other songs that would ever appear on the Hot 100, and it was Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go, both from Combat Rock.

It was an attempt to write a club track that could also get them backstage at a V Club tour.

The double A side with Should I Stay or Should I Go shows a different side.

Jones sings lead and the song sounds like a straightforward, almost pop punk anthem.

But it doesn't hit the same heights as Rock the Casbah.

Listening to Combat Rock now is different because the sonic clarity hides the chaotic undercurrent of their internal bickering.

and yet when you play the song on repeat, you still hear that punch.

A single riff on Rock the Casbah, and an anthem-style chorus in Should I Stay or Should I Go.

Those riffs are built on power chords that could have been ripped off by a Ramones guitarist, but The Clash adds reggae syncopation that turns them into something more than three-chord.
