Shot Heard 'Round the World

And so I started thinking, "Well, wait a minute.

Wasn't it...?" Yeah, it was 73 years ago on October 3rd, just 10 days ago, when Bobby Thomson hit the shot heard 'round the world.

Remember, it was a playoff game, a one-game playoff between the Dodgers and the Giants.

I should say-- I'm sorry.

They had seen each other in the parking lot prior to the game.

They were friends, wished each other a great off-season.

And then Bobby Thomson was about to ruin Ralph Branca's off-season and the rest of his career by hitting what they called the shot heard 'round the world.

They called it the Miracle at Coogan's Bluff because the Polo Grounds in New York City were located down at the bottom of a bluff called Coogan's Bluff.

Well, here's Monte Irvin.

Monte had two of the best years of anybody ever had playing in the National League, and of course, any time you think of Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard Around the World, the great finish of the Giants, the man who was the Rock of Gibraltar throughout that season was Monte Irvin-

That's right

... with those '51 Giants.
