Shōnan

The band's new album, Human After All, will be released on September 2nd via UNFD.

Sim, also known as Silence Is Mine, began in Shonan, Kanagawa, Japan.

After conquering their native country with a volatile mix of nu metal and postmodern hard rock, injected with hardcore attitude, the self-described reggae punks from Japan broke into the US rock scene with a handful of hand hard-charged singles.

The band's music conjures the melodic bombast and rhythmic punch of early 2000s heavy hitters, with precision blasts of chunky metalcore and the renegade spirit of classic reggae, two-tone ska and punk that supercharged generations of subculture.

And this is part two of our Shonan episode.

Last week we talked about the Taiyōzoku, the Sun Tribe, and Ishihara Shintaro's novel that gave a name to a generation on this coast.

We talked about the arrival of surfing through American servicemen at Atsugi in 1961, the specific beach culture that grew from it at Chigasaki, and the music of Southern All-Stars, Tube, and Shonan no Kaze that turned those summer days into something permanent.

Today, we go to the water itself, to the island that sits just off the Shonan shore and has been receiving visitors, pilgrims, generals, lovers and tourists for over a thousand years.

Enoshima Enoshima is a small island in Sagami Bay, 6.3 meters in circumference, connected to the mainland at Fujisawa City by a 600-meter bridge.

From the Shonan coast, it is always visible.

A low, rounded shape on the water that has been part of this horizon for so long that it appears in the oldest landscape paintings of the region.

Today and next week, we focus on one specific part of it, a stretch of coastline with its own identity, its own music, and its own mythology.

Today, we are spending our time in Shonan.

Shonan is not a city.

It is not a municipality.

It does not appear on administrative maps as a single defined territory.

A sound.

A temperature, a particular quality of light on dark volcanic sand at 7 in the morning when the surfers are already in the water.

The Shonan coast runs along the northern shore of Sagami Bay in Kanagawa Prefecture, roughly 60 kilometers southwest of central Tokyo.

The bento are offered for children during the summer holidays when no school lunches are served.

The program was started in twenty twenty during the COVID-19 pandemic by Shonan Mizukos Keikaku, which has been working on, among other things, operating a hangout space for children.

Mizukos Keikaku roughly translates as mishmash program.

Through its lunch program, the unemployed woman said she requested boxed lunches for her twin children, who are elementary school pupils.

The woman lost her job at the end of July as her company, which she had worked for seven years, went bankrupt.
