Shōgun

It's that kind of golden hour at the end of the evening.

Our cover image is this kind of very conker brown trench coat worn by Asami Misakawa, who's an actress from Tokyo and starring in Shogun.

And then we also have sort of a very sort of enveloping theme, lots of spas, lots of hikes, lots of road trips.

We'll come on to all of that a little later, but Brooke, I want to bring you in on this.

Think of it like this.

It's been three or four years since Shogun aired now.

But Shogun, it was so fire in the first two episodes.

They were like, fuck.

We don't even give a fuck that y'all covered the first two books in the first season.

It's just this one thing.

Um, like Shogun.

Or or the thing on Bob Fosse or whatever.

I watched the 12-part Maxi TV series, Shogun.

When I was like 11 or 12, and this came out a couple years later, but I feel like someone probably did the same thing.

They probably watched Shogun when I was 11 or 12 and then started making this movie because the timing is kind of there.

This is very definitely heavily influenced by that kind of Japanese aesthetic.

I think like Seven Samurai, isn't that like, I can't remember the name of the Japanese director from like the 50s and 60s.

Uh, so I didn't know this one on the first read-through.

Uh, and then I came back and sort of reading it upside down realized that the important part here is Toda Mariko, which is a very Japanese-sounding name, and a very Japanese drama on FX recently was Shōgun.

Mm-hmm.

Uh, which we did not watch, uh, largely because we don't watch much in the way of dramas that are not about very large men punching mysteries until they die.

Mm-hmm.

Uh, so yeah, that, that works for me.

I, I remember Shōgun winning a lot of awards.

Mm-hmm.

Ooh

... was so good in Shōgun that I will forgive her a lot, and there are a few episodes in this TV series that I, I needed to forgive.

But what really makes this show compelling to me and why I kept coming back was because I have so much fondness for Kurt Russell.
