It's time to talk Tolkien.

I'm Sara Brown, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, and I'm here with the Man of the West, who I have a feeling is gonna throw me under the proverbial bus more than once today, Alan Sisto.

And I'm Sarah, Shieldmaiden of Rohan.

And whether you've heard all of our episodes from season one, or this is the first time you've ever heard of us, we're delighted that you're here.

Today, we'll be following our pattern from season one by reviewing what we mean by ritual, and then applying those concepts to the different examples of ritual that we find in the series.

They were real people whose reputations were preserved through oral tradition and eventually put into writing.

And then there were the shield maidens, who deserve a moment of their own.

Shield maidens were women who fought alongside men in Viking wars.

Some sources suggest they fought formally, while others suggest they were extraordinary individuals who fought without any official designation.

Archaeology is beginning to support the literary evidence that some women participated in combat.

They are still a little bit aways, but they are coming closer and closer.

Sarathe, the shield maiden who seems to be the leader of this group, is at the forefront, and they are marching closer.

Stand down and turn this vehicle over to us.

She has reached out to the council.

She's reached out to her former sisters at the Shield Maidens.

She's even tried, probably against Brula's desires, to contact Nysis, and has had very little progress or ideas from anyone.

So, the morning comes and she wakes up.
