Sherbrooke Forest

After I finished my zoology honours, I did volunteer work up at Dandurong Ranges National Park.

And I also were part of the friends group up there, friends of Sherbrooke Forest and the Lyabird study groups up there as well.

So I used to go walking in the morning with one of the elders of the group, who was amazing.

I would walk along with her at six o'clock in the morning and she knew where every single superb lyrebird hung out.

I was probably in my early 20s and they were probably in their 50s or 60s.

And I would follow them around all these spots through Sherbrooke Forest and the Dandenong Ranges, finding lyrebirds at different time of the year and especially around mating season when they were going on their mounds.

Superb live birds are one of my favourite birds because they're so interesting in terms of how they navigate a space, how you can track them through this, how they scratch the ground so you know where they've been.

Of course, their uniqueness as a mimic as well.

They had arrangements with undertakers to bury two bodies in the one grave.

They would bury them in Sherbrooke Forest, and these are just the places that I know about.

Do you know what, what grieves me now and was driving us then is that these are families where children had no mother, where husbands had lost their wife, where parents had lost their daughters.
