All of this information was compiled.

And we really had this beautiful but honest snapshot of Shawnee County and particularly city of Topeka.

And what were the needs that our community had? And at the end of that, with all these different perspectives, all of this different research, taking the time to analyze it.

What came out of that was a couple of recommendations.

The work aims to improve safety, address deteriorating conditions, and comply with federal consent decrees.

A new $21 million 60-bed behavioral health unit for individuals awaiting trial who require mental health, substance use, suicide prevention, or competency services opened last week at the Shawnee County Jail in Topeka, Kansas.

The 23,000-square-foot addition features three specialized treatment pathways, enhanced daily programming, and therapeutic design elements.

HTK Architects and HDR designed the facility, which KBS Constructors built following a three-year development process.
