The Birth of Magic: Black Magic (1975) & Black Magic 2 (1976) [Episode 9]
N
0:32NaomiHOST
An incredibly underrepresented yet influential and bustling horror film scene which materialised during this time was occurring in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
N
0:41NaomiHOST
Shaw Brothers began producing exploitation horror that got more daring and taboo for the 1970s audiences, even swapping the period dramas, classical sets and costumes for the contemporary urbanisation occurring in Hong Kong.
N
0:53NaomiHOST
No better films reflect this shift than Ho Ming-Fua's Blackmagic 1975 and Blackmagic 2 1976, which brought old world superstitions into modern times with goop, gore and bugs.
N
1:05NaomiHOST
Blackmagic 1 and 2 were not just financial successes but also helped spawn the Blackmagic subgenre that only grew larger in the 1980s.
N
3:37NaomiHOST
And Trevor has stated that this is a great starting point for anyone wanting to get into the weirdness that is Black Magic.
T
3:45TrevorHOST
Yeah, yeah.
T
3:46TrevorHOST
This is a really great starting point because this is really debatedly where the entire subgenre started with Shaw Brothers really catapulting themselves into horror and...
T
3:59TrevorHOST
They didn't really realize they were creating a subgenre, obviously.

D
25:43Dave ParkerHOST
They're long.
D
25:44Dave ParkerHOST
Um, they're not, you know, some, they can compare it to live to like, you know, some of the Shaw brothers finest moments.
D
25:49Dave ParkerHOST
It's not there.
D
25:50Dave ParkerHOST
Um, the guillotine is cool.
D
26:56Dave ParkerHOST
All they say visual vengeance, fold-out poster.
D
26:58Dave ParkerHOST
So yeah, this is a pretty fun one here.
D
27:00Dave ParkerHOST
I would recommend it if you're into these movies, if you're a big fan of Shaw Brothers or martial arts films, and this should be up your alley.
D
27:05Dave ParkerHOST
It's not a Shaw Brothers movie, of course, but, um, it definitely cut from the same cloth, the more low budget cloth, you know, but it's still good.
Violence Sampler!
E
5:39Elric KaneHOST
This is the hardest one to talk about, I found, too.
E
5:42Elric KaneHOST
Like, I had kind of least to say because these movies rely completely on kind of the choreography and the violence, you know? I did a Shaw Brothers film I'd never heard of.
E
5:52Elric KaneHOST
I was just researching stuff and came across one called The Black Tavern.
E
5:55Elric KaneHOST
Do you know this one?
E
9:08Elric KaneHOST
And then you finally kind of get someone who's a little better, and you get some really cool female action stars, too.
E
9:14Elric KaneHOST
It has a bit of a Hitchcock setup, but then, you know, just goes all in on the crazy Whip stuff.
E
9:20Elric KaneHOST
And the Whip's choreography of this stuff and the sound effects, this is Shaw Brothers.
E
9:25Elric KaneHOST
Jackie Chan is in the sides that you wouldn't even recognize that he was in the movie because he was so early in his career but he's like one of the thugs who's helping the guys but this is like multiple body parts being hacked off by whips and swords and true carnage and it really impressed me because it was also atmospheric because it's in the snow and it's all in the place so obviously I just don't recall this one ever coming up but I absolutely know that this is probably one that uh quentin's a fan of and probably was partially you know one of the things he might have been drawing on for that movie because i'd be shocked if it wasn't uh highest rec i watched this one on amazon prime so it's obviously around to see but it was you know it's always a nice surprise when it's one that just i wasn't i was looking at other things for slash i wasn't thinking i was going to be using a whip for hack slash but then it ended up being this perfect tool so a fun curveball there nice slash black tavern i like black tavern yes so our next category is

Kung Fu Is in Everything: More Than Martial Arts, It’s a Way of Life
S
12:09Sam WithershineGUEST
As far as kind of like if you want the bigger, what got me into martial arts, that type of thing.
S
12:21Sam WithershineGUEST
the two biggest things were, like most people who got into Kung Fu, at least at my age and stuff, we grew up on the old Kung Fu movies, the chop sake movies where the mouth doesn't match the words, you know, Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest, and I love these things to this day.
S
12:37Sam WithershineGUEST
My girlfriend, shout out to Blair, she tolerates me watching Kung Fu movies, but she probably wishes I watched a little less of them, you know, here or there.
S
12:48Sam WithershineGUEST
So I, I try to be conscious of that.
