Uh, earlier this summer, rangers with Shasta-Trinity National Forest found a woman camping in an off-limits area on the south side of Shasta, clearly marked with no camping signage.

You get up there, there's no camping signage, even though AI has said, "No, go ahead and set up camp there." Uh, but you don't believe the signs that are in front of you.

Well, three young novice climbers were rescued last week after becoming stranded while descending Mount Shasta during a poorly prepared trip that relied heavily on AI-generated advice.

According to a statement by Shasta Trinity National Forest's lead climbing ranger, The ill-fated hike started out on August 29th when the three hikers left the Clear Creek Trailhead and arrived at the Clear Creek Head Springs.

Around 8 p.m., the trio established a base camp at a site where camping is prohibited.

At 3 a.m. the next morning, they began their climb with enough food and water based on an anticipated eight-hour climb.

Two helicopter hoists were attempted by California Highway Patrol, but the terrain and strong winds prevented the climbers from being evacuated by air.

The rangers and members of Siskiyou County Search and Rescue helped return the group to their base camp and eventually the trailhead, concluding the rescue at 6.30 p.m. Forest Service officials noted the importance of proper preparation for hikes following the rescue.

Shasta Trinity National Forest's lead climbing ranger said it is important to use reliable information sources for climbs like Mount Shasta and to have backups to any electronic navigation you might use, and paper maps of the route are a pretty good choice.

It's also important to have an established turnaround time and stick to that.

It alleges the publicly owned utilities equipment sparked the blaze and that the district failed to properly inspect power lines, trim hazardous trees, and clear vegetation.

The fire burned about 450 acres in the Shasta Trinity National Forest and cost more than $2 million to fight.

In Butte County, health officials reported the county's second West Nile virus death of the year this week.

But local health officer Dr. Jared Bowden says despite the deaths, West Nile virus activity is about where he'd expect it to be this time of year.
