Sharon Van Etten

There's a whole range of bands that, that, that they sort of like have originated and been part of, and that they've worked together in a scene that I don't know anything about.

The only other one that he worked with that I do know something about, or at least I have their album, was Sharon Van Etten, who I like, or I like the album that he worked on with her.

Um, but you know, a lot of these people are just names to me, you know? So again, if you're a fan of Kurt Vile, you'll know a lot more about all of that, the sound that they're doing, and there may be, you know, I don't know, things that obviously people who, uh, uh, follow those groups and the, the scene that War on Drugs are part of will sort of be able to be far more articulate about them than I can be.

Um, but as I say, I would reiterate, I think, you know, this century, you know, if you're writing a book about the music of this century, [laughs] we've often said it'll be a fairly s- sh- uh, slim volume because we're not quite so impressed by this century's music p- output as we were in the previous century.

Lido Festival was originally meant to be a three-day event in June that was rescheduled due to the conditions of Victoria Park.

So the original lineup was meant to feature Father John Misty, Sharon Van Etten, Bombay Bicycle Club and Metronomy.

And it was meant to be a three-day festival that was moved to one in August.

Would that have made it any good?

lead is so good yeah and the actress that plays Anya Kaya Wilkins is like a musician primarily this is like one of her only movies

Oh, she is giving like sort of Sharon Van Etten energy.

Yeah.

She's a musician known as Okay Kaya.

The label began in Bloomington in 1996 when Eric Weddle, Jonathan Cargill, and brothers Ben and Chris Swanson founded Secretly Canadian.

What started as a small DIY effort has grown into one of the most respected independent music companies in the world, with artists including Bon Iver, Mitski, Bright Eyes, Krung Ben, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Japanese Breakfast, and Phoebe Bridgers, among many others.

This week, the company is celebrating its anniversary with three nights of concerts featuring artists from across its history and current roster.

I recently spoke with two of Secretly's four original founders, Eric Weddle and Ben Swanson.

So it's a little bit trying to do past, present, and future is kind of the concept for it.

So like on Thursday, August 27th at the Bluebird, know june panic our very first artist is playing i haven't seen him in over 20 years early day miners old bloomington band we put out a bunch of records with my old roommates and then uh magnolia and johnson electric company doing a bunch of molina songs and so that's kind of a little bit like the throwback night on friday the 20 august 28th at the buzz curve chumley it's going to be a little bit more songwriter based New artist from L.A., Jordan Patterson, who I just love, a super wild, distinctive, beautiful voice.

We'll be playing along with two of our present favorites and just pals, Kevin Morby and Sharon Van Etten.

And then on Saturday at the Switchyard Park as part of the Grand Falloon Festival will be Angela Autumn, Jensen McRae, songwriter out of L.A., and Duran Jones and the Indications will bring it home.

Um, and and then he called me the day before and was like, "Oh, I'm just gonna, I'm gonna bring some mates of mine around.

I hope you don't mind if they intrude on the session." And I was like, "Oh, of course." And he said that Jorge was gonna be there, who, as you just mentioned, is a weapon and drums in Sharon Van Etten's band.

Um, and I knew him.

And, and, and Maxim Ludwig, who does his own, uh, music, but is also the guitarist and husband of Angel Olsen.

And it would be really easy for the storminess to just override the delicacy and just bury it completely, but you take a track like Helicopters, she has a skill that kind of reminds me of, like, Sharon Van Etten, where Sharon Van Etten can do these very whispery, you know, very, very soft songs, but she is also, like, a rock and roll frontwoman, and she can rock your face off at a giant theater, and she can also, you know, melt your heart in a coffee shop, [laughs] you know, if you were lucky enough to see her there.

And I think that same vibe permeates this record, you know, where, where there is, there is a grandeur and a j- a bigness to these songs, but her voice is always there pulling you close.

I know one thing for certain.
