The primary driver of the large-scale bulk flow that extends deep beyond the Great Attractor is a truly colossal structure known as the Shapley Supercluster.

Interestingly, it was originally discovered back in the 1930s by the pioneering American astrophysicist Harlow Shapley long before we knew about peculiar velocities.

It's located approximately 650 million light years from Earth.

That's incredibly far.

It's almost exhausting trying to visualize distances that vast.

And the mass is equally staggering.
