Shallop

Specifically, a type of shallow coastal vessel called a shallop, usually only used by civilians.

It was an unconventional idea, but it did have its merits.

Shallops could be built quickly and maintained easily.

Smaller ships were much faster and more maneuverable than bigger, heavier frigates and ships of the line.

They could also move by oar power, even against the wind or in calm weather.
