And I'm sure that Larry Kudlow probably knows, but he won't say it, That there are still people out there who calculate it the way that it was calculated before they started these regular changes in the late 1990s.
David KnightHOST
34:41
And that's a place called Shadow Stats.
David KnightHOST
34:44
They calculate inflation the way it used to be calculated.
David KnightHOST
34:46
And if we calculate it that way, we see that it's 11%.

Brannon HowseHOST
23:57
All right.
Brannon HowseHOST
23:57
And of course, we got guys like Walter John Williams at ShadowStats that's been saying for years, "Add 7%." Whatever the government tell you- tells you, add 7%.
Brannon HowseHOST
24:06
I think the real inflation rate, Mike, is probably somewhere around 9 or 10% or more.
Brannon HowseHOST
24:12
What do you think?
Robert KientzGUEST
6:47
And I did two inflation measures.
Robert KientzGUEST
6:48
I did regular CPI and I did ShadowStats.
Robert KientzGUEST
6:51
Shadowstats.com's run by John Williams, who's a classically trained economist.
Kerry LutzHOST
6:54
Mm-hmm.
Brannon HowseHOST
21:11
All right.

What do you think?
Mario InneccoGUEST
8:46
So I don't trust the number.
Mario InneccoGUEST
8:49
And yeah, John Williams from Shadow Stats, you've probably heard of him.
Mario InneccoGUEST
8:55
He has a whole website dedicated to that.
Mario InneccoGUEST
9:02
And yeah, most people don't believe in this number even though 3.7 is higher than the target of two percent that the fed has but even two percent jeremy uh over 40 years that really dilutes the value of the currency so i i'm of the opinion that yeah inflation is a tax and uh it is an unfair tax um and the only way to uh really have no inflation is to have no central bank, to have sound money, and actually not allow the Congress or government to run a deficit.
RonHOST
30:40
That's actually higher.
RonHOST
30:41
There's a website called ShadowStats, and you and I know ...
RonHOST
30:44
I mean, really, seriously, if we went together right now, if we went back to, to January 2021 and went to the grocery store with $100 bill, okay, and bought a $100 worth of groceries, and today went back to that same grocery store- With $129? I don't think we could get- I think prices at the grocery store, for instance, have doubled.
RonHOST
31:07
So as crazy as that number is, and it shows us that the value of the dollar is going down.
Brannon HowseHOST
23:03
Now, I interviewed many years ago, and I still follow his work, an economist by the name of John Walter Williams.
Brannon HowseHOST
23:09
His website is shadowstats.com. And he has argued for years that changes in how the government calculates inflation have understated the true cost of living.
Brannon HowseHOST
23:21
His practical adjustment, well, it's simple.
Brannon HowseHOST
23:24
Take the official number and add roughly seven percentage points.
MikeHOST
12:01
Okay, but says, "Which fell sharply from 9.1% peak in 2022, but this year has ticked higher since the war began in late February." Okay, so If 9.1 was the peak in 2022, and I remember talking at that time saying how the figures were bogus then.
MikeHOST
12:20
John Williams from Shadowstats gave us, was it 15%, 16% in real terms using 1980s CPI basket to get a good accurate measurement.
MikeHOST
12:33
Okay.
MikeHOST
12:33
So yeah, more of this, more of this stuff here.
Brannon HowseHOST
35:39
Let me ask you this, Michael.
Brannon HowseHOST
35:41
Um, the real rate of inflation, John Walter Williams over at shadowstats.com, I think he says, "Whatever the government says is the inflation rate, add 7%." Would you agree with that?
Michael WeinerGUEST
35:54
I do, but I think we should stop messing around with the inflation rates, because I think-
Brannon HowseHOST
35:57
Well, I agree with that.
