Self Employed Women's Association

So thinking about some of those connections became interesting.

And then when I, uh, did, uh-- went to university, um, I did a master's in development studies, and I was introduced to the story of the Self-Employed Women's Association, SEWA, uh, established by Ela Bhatt in the 1970s.

And I was really kind of intrigued to learn about the strategies that y- you could say little people on the margins of society, the very kind of excluded and poor, uh, such as women working in the informal economy in India, were able to use, particularly kind of forms of solidarity, uh, collective action, pooling of resources.

Um, and, you know, it really sort of furthered my interest in the different ways in which women can organize.
