Until the manner of his death had been made clear his ubiquitous presence was not to be exorcised.

On the morning of the memorable day a reward of one hundred dollars (afterwards increased to five hundred, at the insistence of Mr. Shackford's cousin) had been offered by the Board of Selectmen for the arrest and conviction of the guilty party.

Beyond this and the unsatisfactory inquest, the authorities had done nothing, and were plainly not equal to the situation.

When it was stated, the night of the funeral, that a professional person was coming to Stillwater to look into the case, the announcement was received with a breath of relief.

So the board met on Monday, August 31st, and we had a very full agenda.

Welcome to Town Matters, a podcast about what's going on in Brattleboro town government.

I'm Town Manager Jon Potter, and today I'll be giving you an overview of what happened at the Selectboard's most recent regular meetings, and those were on Tuesday, August 4th, and Tuesday, September 1st, as well as what's on the agenda.

Or actually, I'm going to give you a preview of the agenda for Tuesday, September 15th, which has not been finalized yet.

And, and finally, at the end, I'll mention a few announcements before wrapping things up.

[upbeat music] At the Selectboard's regular meeting on August 4th, there were seven items on the consent agenda, and those included a tobacco license and tobacco substitute endorsement permit for Smoker's Paradise Tobacco & Convenience to be located at 227 Main Street.

Uh, an annual entertainment license for Top of the Hill Grill at 632 Putney Road.

A first-class liquor license and outside consumption permit renewal for North Chair Brewing at 39 Frost Street, and a new second-class liquor license for Love Heart Larry's LLC, which is located at 485 West River Road.

And finally, a contract to Bill Harlow & Sons Excavating of Putney for a total cost not to exceed $449,345 to improve five segments of existing stormwater infrastructure up along Sunset Lake Road, and this was funded by a fiscal year '26 Grants in Aid award.

Charlotte, so tell me about your story in Old Lyme.

So it began at a Board of Selectmen meeting and a public comment brought forward a letter from a co-chair of the Soundview Commission, which is in charge of public areas and the public beach in Soundview, having concerns about a particular event that was scheduled to take place at the end of August.

So can you talk a little bit about what this event was and sort of, you know, the dialogue going on around it?

So the event was really just a beach gathering of friends and acquaintances that were going to gather on Soundview Beach as a skip day.

I want to start first by

saying thank you to the Board of Selectmen, Greg, Bob, the Fire Department,

all the help with replacing the AC system.

The AC system has been in place for about two weeks now and it's working great.

I'm the Special Projects and Grants Manager for the Town of Rockport.

I work out of the Select Board and Town Administrator's Office.

Special projects ends up meaning everything from long-term projects.

We're in the midst of designing a town hall renovation right now.

But we want to make sure that they still feel like home to the residents themselves.

having that vision and being willing to support the vision of the residents and of those active in the community is really the biggest, I think, opportunity for growth for municipal officials.

And I think it goes beyond just select board members or town managers or administrators or city council and things of that sort.

I think it really needs to percolate down into Those other department heads as well, you know, folks who are running, you know, community development departments, running public works departments, and really understanding that this is like a whole, you know, you hear from the state a lot, a whole of government approach for this type of thing.

Next into some more regular business is the select board meeting recap.

Obviously this is a little bit older.

So today that I'm recording this is August 26th.

Our last select board meeting was Monday, August 3rd.

And that was obviously before the special town meeting.

The next select board meeting is August 31st.

Officials claim that five of Littleton's Flock Safety cameras were switched back on by the company without informing the town after the town temporarily disabled the cameras earlier this year.

In a statement Thursday, the town said Selectboard Chair Gary Wilson had requested that the Littleton Police Department access the automatic license plate reading cameras to verify their status.

In doing so Thursday morning, police found that five of the town's six cameras had been reactivated by Flock, quote, "with no notification to the town," unquote.

In this statement, it said, quote, "There is no data shared from Littleton cameras to other jurisdictions, and at no time did LPD access any data gathered by the cameras in Littleton while they were powered.

Selectboard Chairman Wilson and the Selectboard were notified and immediately requested the Littleton Electric Light Department turn the breaker off to each camera.

As of Thursday afternoon, LELD confirmed," that's their electric company, uh, "turning off the camera power.

Selectboard Chairman Wilson and the Selectboard then directed town council to initiate cancellation of the contract with Flock Safety and directed the town administrator to coordinate the removal of the six cameras on public ways with the Department of Public Works," unquote.

The cameras in Littleton were temporarily deactivated May 12th, quote, "to allow the Selectboard and municipal staff time to review the technology, better understand the available system features and operational capabilities, and evaluate policy considerations before any future decisions are made," unquote, according to a frequently asked questions page about the cameras on the town's website.

It's time to force the confrontation.
