Seed saving

Yeah, that's good.

Well, I thought we could take a couple minutes, a few minutes to sort of talk bigger picture philosophy, et cetera, before we drill into some of the basic how-tos of some seed saving for those of us who maybe could do a little bit less minute seed saving.

You posted a short video recently on YouTube that reminded me of lessons that another seed steward like yourself imprinted on me long ago.

Sort of some buzzwords that seed is alive, self-replicating, and adaptive.

so glad that you cited Ronnie's Red as an example, because in one sense, it's every seed saver's dream.

And in another sense, it really underlies and underscores the urgency of why seed saving matters on any scale.

Ronnie Bramwell, in short, was a now good friend who lives in Westport, which is adjacent to Dartmouth and where Freed Seed Federation originated.

So on October 9th, we'll have Ethereal Egyptian Rhythms with Abu Zain, or Adam Elabd, who does pop-up DJing for us with Swanatoons on this very radio.

Following that, also in the garden, featuring our very own Ali Irons, who is also an independent artist, there will be Resisting Monocultures on Lawning and Seed Saving, that is during the open hours in the garden.

That will be on Wednesday, October 14th.

On October 16th, we're going to be screening our first film of the season, WTO 99, that is on the Battle of Seattle and is sort of the origin story for a lot of the activists in our community with the beginning of what was the Indymedia movement.

Which conveniently brings us toward the kitchen.

Kiwi seed saving is nothing like saving your favorite bean or tomato.

Yes, kiwi contains plenty of those tiny black seeds.

Yes, you can grow plants from them.

You don't see the seed germinate, the plant grow, the flowers appear, the pollinators arrive, the fruit form, and then another generation of seeds develop inside that fruit.

I've been saving seeds over the past few years I've been gardening, and it's really magical.

And once you see that cycle for yourself, a seed stops looking disposable.

One tiny seed can become a plant that gives you pounds of food, and that plant can then produce dozens or hundreds more seeds.

We like that.

Saving seeds.

Mm-hmm.

Now, God tells you to plant seeds, you know.

That was some of the conversation.

And right off, we start out with what we've already talked about.

Saving seeds, fall chores.

Easy group for saving anything seed-wise.

So I don't know where that went wrong.

But the other job I think people should be doing if they have the resources is saving seed.

Yes.

So partly, I suppose, the early autumn, but a lot of plants are going to seed and we have our old favourites, the nigella and sweet pea and honesty.

Super useful.

But again, one of my main purposes was to seed save.

Yes.

So it's really just a regenerative, self-producing, self-sustaining, cyclical garden.
