Second Sudanese Civil War

Sudan's civil war has not made headlines lately, but the fighting between the army and the paramilitary rapid support forces continues to fuel what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Foreign powers are deeply involved in the conflict.

Egypt, Iran, and Turkey support the Sudanese armed forces.

The United Arab Emirates is a primary backer of the RSF.

So you talked about the war moving toward the east.

We're talking the Ethiopian border.

So what does yet another front in the conflict mean for the humanitarian situation on the ground?

Well, the increase in the different varieties and numbers and directions of the battlefront is actually a very specific strategy employed by the paramilitary RSF to spread thin the Sudanese Armed Forces' capacity and capability, knowing that it was losing territory to the Sudanese Armed Forces pretty much from last year in the centre of the country, including the loss of the capital by the paramilitary in March of 2025, and then losing territory very, very recently in July and August of this year, Again, to the Sudanese armed forces, the paramilitaries recognized that they had to effectively split the battlefront, both in the east, on the border with Ethiopia, and also in the west, on the border with Chad, as well as in the center, in a town called Al Ubaid, in order to be able to maximize their engagement and leverage with neighboring countries against the central army.
