Seán MacBride

And-

You see, pe- people do deride this though, but you go back to the Brown Donoghue's kind of seminal book on politics and the GA, Over the Bar, and he talks about a meeting of left-wing politicians down the country some point in the '50s, and that it's a huge crowd on Saturday, and they're all gone on Sunday 'cause there's an All-Ireland semi-final, and Sean McBride is the person that he just cannot understand how this has happened.

And he said, "Well, you'll never understand Irish politics if you don't understand that move." So I, I think there is, there can be a degree of snobbery in saying, uh, that this doesn't matter as much as TDs think it does, that they know it matters, and it matters for a reason.

It isn't a huge amount of money, 300 million, but a seat could be dependent on it.

There wasn't any hope of winning that.

But Sean McBride actually said to Pádraig Piers, as he was taken off to be court-martialed in Richmond Barracks, Next time, take to the hills.

Don't be fighting in the streets.

What we have then as a legacy after those two years of the War of Independence are quite skilled guerrilla fighters, many of whom were well used to that down in Kerry and West Cork, bits of Clare and Tipperary.
