Seabrook

The students essentially ran it themselves and the school just needed an adult attached to it.

Among the kids who signed up was a cluster from Seabrook, which was the poorest town in New Hampshire and surrounding areas.

Amongst the Seabrook kids was a 15-year-old called Billy Flynn.

Billy had landed in Seabrook in 1987 at age 12 when his parents' marriage disintegrated in California and his mother Elaine had moved the children across the country.

A year later, his father, who had only just come back into Billy's life, had died, high speed and drunk, ploughing into the rear of a petrol tanker.

What a way to go.

Inside of the home was where all of his anger lived.

What held him steady were three boys, Pete Randall, Junior Lateem and Ralph Welch.

Yeah, I'm not going to give you $500 either.

Why not? It's Seabrook, New Hampshire.

We're in Seabrook, New Hampshire.

And then she's in Manchester this Saturday.

Oh, nice.

Thursday.

This Thursday? All right.

Well, Friday, Sarah Talamash and I are in, I think it might be close to sold out, Seabrook, New Hampshire.

To be clear, neither man has ever been charged in connection with the case, and both have denied wrongdoing.

In the early hours of July fifth, two thousand, a quiet factory in Seabrook, New Hampshire became the scene of a baffling mystery.

A security guard's car was found ablaze in the parking lot, and the guard's booth stood abandoned, a pack of cigarettes and an untouched lunch still on the desk.

The guard, forty-year-old Curtis Pishon, had vanished without a trace.

Curtis became withdrawn, battled depression, and for a time drank heavily as he struggled to find a new purpose.

By nineteen ninety-eight, he was trying to turn his life around.

He found work as a night security guard at the Venture Corporation auto parts factory in Seabrook.

It wasn't his dream job, but a role where his police experience was useful and the physical demands were manageable despite his condition.

So I reached out to a couple of like beef shops that I admire and I think are doing absolutely incredible that look like they want to expand someday.

And, uh, I have a conversation with Tostimos and then Seabrook, New Hampshire.

Husband and wife, two kids.

I don't know their timeline, but I know they took it over too.

in jail for? I got my first job as an organizer when I was arrested for criminal trespass in New Hampshire in 1977.

There were 1,400 of us arrested for occupying the proposed nuclear power plant in Seabrook, New Hampshire.

Civil disobedience.

So it wasn't like for some serious offense, at least in my mind at the time, it was a protest.

Then a friend of mine then encouraged me to join, to work with Clamshell Alliance.

So I started going up to Seabrook, New Hampshire to protest the nuclear power station.

One of my friends from school, Brian Fiegenbaum, got arrested on May 24th, 1980.

So we found somebody with some money to bail him out and we wanted to pay him back.

I will say, I think the first hole of the second round of this year's Mid-Am team, when I ripped a 30-footer 15 feet past the hole and off the green and Mike was over the back in two...

I think I said sorry then, but it was, that was, I don't know if I slept at Seabrook that night.

You know, I thought I was at Mount Washington, but I got a little nuclear on that pot.

I don't know where it came from, but

We were gonna be called the Food and Drug Administration, but the, our fundraising apparatus, which was selling drugs, [laughs] uh, we thought that might get us in trouble.

But, um, so anyway, we, we, uh, we decide on the name Food Not Bombs, but, um, before we become f- really that, uh, I was in Clamshell Alliance, which was trying to shut down the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station.

And I was introduced to that in a lecture, uh, my freshman year by Howard Zinn, uh, who talked about how he was one of the 14- 14 that was held for a week or two, uh, in a civil disobedience action trying to shut down the nuclear power station, which was about 45 minutes north of Boston, uh, right across the border in New Hampshire, Seabrook, New Hampshire, on the coast.

And so, um, I went to, I spent a year with the Clamshell organizing for the October 6, 1979 action, which for I think most of us that were at that was transformative.

You know, we were trying to physically, um, take over a nuclear power station construction site, and, uh, the 82nd Air- Airborne was there, National Guard units from around New England, state police from around New England, and they were using, dropping tear gas out of helicopters, and, and water cannons, and mace, and beating the living heck out of us and everything.

You didn't have to have ID on you, and that way you could get out of jail maybe faster and, and you didn't have any association with the state as a result.

So, um, anyway, he, but he was the person giving the, uh, talking to the media.

He had been chosen to be our mo- media spokesperson for Clamshell, uh, may- really technically the Coalition for Direct Action at Seabrook.
